Old rifle, not a reloading question...

I posted this in the main board but thought I would ask you guys also.

Today I inherited some old guns from my uncle 3 out of 4 are just an old single shot shotgun a old target master remington single shot .22 and a old Argentine mauser in 7.65..

But one is a nice old remington 788 in .308 the only problem with the gun thats had maybe 2 boxes through it maybe. Is on the side of the receiver he etched his drivers license number on it.. I don't know why anyone would but he did..

Does anyone know a decent Smith in the Austin TX. area that could fix it and reblue it? The guns NOT stolen its been in the family for decades and I don't care if they ask the police to run the serial number etc. It's not horrible but it dang sure ain't nice on a great looking old gun, the only blemish on the gun is that darn number. Great barrel and trigger stocks still nice etc.

I know this is not a reloading question..sorry..

Were I in your position I wouldn't do anything more than clean it up, maybe wipe some oil into the etching.

It doesn't affect accuracy or operation, just a little added character to a nice rifle that was 'previously owned,' like cigarette burns on the edge of an old bedside table top.

How are the target master and the Argentine? Those are the two that caught my attention......

I agree. Either one "could be" more valueabe. Personally, I'd leave the family history on the gun. I like those old stories.

Exactly what my father said... Might just leave it then.. Thanks everyone for the replys.

I haven't got to the Mauser or target master .22 yet.
The mauser has missing cleaning rod and front and rear sights Becouse someone mounted a scope on it and I guess didn't know there are rings in heights taller than short. That appears all that wrong with it. Well other than his driver license number on the box magazine also. It appears parts are out there becouse the front and rear sights can be had for I believe 40 bucks.. Front just slips on basically and rear is just pinned on.. No big deal really there.

The target master really has no blueing on it but no rust, I have been told they were high nickle guns and thats why there's no rust.. Don't know if thats true.. It functions , the stock has a scratch on the end of the forearm but other than that it's a great stock they have been just sitting in a wooden display case in his living room for a long time. This one has no driver license info on it...lol... I think its been in the family since it was new so has the old Stevens single shot 20ga.

His kids live up north like DC and have no use for guns. I just can't imagine being from texas myself..I drove back 14 miles into the worst fire in Texas history 30,000 acres and 1700 homes lost, to get my guns which some were my grandfathers and my pets then lost EVERYTHING else 2 hours later.. Couldn't let those old heirlooms burn up or my dog , even if I died trying.. They meen that much to me.. But I have to admit these guns don't fall into the iam driving back into a fire category...
