Old man hunting old school in KY pays off.

I had done filled my only buck tag here in KY with a ML and posted about that and my wife's buck on here with pics. I have a decent collection of old school lever guns and single shot rifles, dating from 1867 -1920. To make it fun I had been doe hunting for a mature doe every day after the wife killed hers, with a different rifle each day. I really wanted to kill one with a 1900 WW Greener stalking rifle in 25/35 but no opportunity presented it self when I had that rifle, or a original 50/70 Rolling block and so on. Last Friday I had gotten in the blind at 3:30pm and hunted till about 5 minutes before dark, when I heard a bunch of deer coming out of the woods behind me and 5 does ran out into a bottom, that is mostly hidden from view unless you happen to know about it. They started picking and I eased my rifle up on to the cross sticks. It was a 1895 Winchester in 30/06, with the fine iron sights zeroed at 100-150 yds and the tang Marbles peep zeroed from 200-250 yds. I had shot enough deer vital sized steel plates at those distances to feel confident in either shot , if I still had light. The biggest doe turned broadside at a tad over 100 yds and I put the fine bead into the notch in the buckhorn rear sight and lined up on her rib cage behind the shoulder to lung shoot her and slowly started to squeeze, the trigger, Boom, whop went the rifle and the bullet at the same time. At the bullet impact the doe jumped straight into the air about 4 feet, came down and mule kicked and took off like a rocket, uphill and stopped on a flat about 80 yds away and reared back and slammed the ground, DRT. I called the wife to bring the Honda side by side and the trailer and she did, I gutted her while she held a light while I gutted her and we got her home and taken care of. That is it for the deer season for us, but with 3 in the freezer we are good to go.
