Old Lyman press

Lyman All American Comet.
Older than some guys on here.
The shell holder is different than modern.
Shank is longer and is held in by a set screw.
Question is. Is there a bushing or adapter to use with modern shell holders?
Antiques Road Show lol.

I never noticed until wanting to switch calibers.

If it's like my AA Turret Lyman sent me an adapter that allows me to use standard shell holders. I'd give them a call. Your description is much like mine.

I remember when I started reloading, presses had proprietary rams with the specific rim dimensions machined into the ram. Change rams to change case dimensions. then someone (RCBS, I think) started supplying a ram with a replaceable shell holder, and these were standardized. But my first press (a C&H) had a ram that was specific to one cartridge dimension. A classic PITA!

I am fairly certain Lyman can supply the correct part so you can change case head dimensions.

C&H Makes an adapter to fit a conventional shell holder in that press. Cost around $20 shipped to VA about 2 years ago.

Yup, there is an adapter you use. I got mine from Lyman, it uses a small flat head set screw to hold your regular shell holder in.

If the comet is like my AA, it’ll outlast the cockroaches.

C&H ??
Out of stock where I have looked.
Can be back ordered.

Yeah this press is not going to win prettiest bench contest,
but I like it better than the one I bought new.
My Contender load book arrives today.

Try CH Tool and Die in Mt Vernon Ohio, 740-397-7214. I bought an adapter for a Lyman press from them about 2 years ago. I believe it is the one they sell for Herter's press that used shell holders that were retained by a set screw. I talked to them by phone and they said they had an adapter that would work and it does.
