Old loading data

I posted a Q? on another site about using several choices in powder other than current flavor,RL15) for 155 Scenar. Doing some homework/cleaning I ran across my Sierra, Hodgdon and an old NRA loading book. These books are 15 - 25 years old. Example NRA book is dated 1981 and has load listing for WW 748 for 150, 165 & 168 That are higher load than currently suggested. Hmmmm ... does this mean this was before the "Evil Litagation" issues that appear to be the norm today ? Dunno but I will start lower than max but even dropping 2 gr is more than current max !! That is interesting !!!

I have an original Accurate Arms manual. Compared to the current loads they are publishing, there are a couple loads that I use that are now a grain or two above their max. Published data changes with the seasons. Take a look at an old Speer manual. That will open your eyes!

Current data from Hodgdon.com lists the max load for a 30-06 loaded with 165 gr bullet as 54.6 gr. One of the old manuals I have in my shop lists the max at 60.1 gr.

Yessir and I do understand that part of it may be changes in the powderas ssome lots are "stronger" than others but ... 3-4 grs or more ?? Everything I am looking at is for 308 WIN. Way back when the "preferred" load for "MilMatch" 173 was either BLC-2 or Win 748. Not too long ago, maybe 10-12years) everyone was all all hyped up over AA2520,?) yeah right, where is it now ?
heh heh heh
