Old german? Scheutzen rifle or Stalking rifle

Every once in a while I pull out my Grandfathers old rifle. 1880 s or so . Bolt action single shot. Octagonal barrel with some engraving. The metal c shaped butt plate that wraps around the shoulder. Fancy scroll trigger guard. I think about getting it shooting again, but other projects seem to come first. I guess I have 3 questions for any one who has fooled with one. It's a 9.5 X47. (Bore cast by gunsmith) Can it be reloaded with a modern powder, if I can find brass? The rear sights are missing. Are there sources for period or replica sights? Any one have any idea how accurate these guns were, as in: were 12 in groups the norm or 1-2 in groups? Thanks for any input, Josh.

I knew a fella that had a large collection of scheutzen rifles. I will try to get his number for you as he also collected those sight sets and moulds for making the bullets. Some of those guns shot quite well.

Thanks guys. Congrats, John, on your 8000 + posts. Quite the effort. We all appreciate your input. Thanks, Lapua, for the book link. I found some brass at $4.00/ each. Ouch, but oh well. Found a couple other leads. I'll "Pick away" at this one. I can't stand having a gun That can't shoot. Thanks again, Josh.

Sounds like a neat gun. Buy the brass whenever you find it, I'd start saving for the dies soon though.

John, i'm a carpenter/ builder by trade. These electronic gizmos baffle me. I spent an hour, yesterday, trying to post pics. My tablet is lucky to be alive. I've got a call in to one of my kids that understands tecno geek. I'll keep at it till I get it. It's very humbling and frustrating.

HOwdy !

Another great place to post your question(s) about such a rifle is the " castboolits " site.
They have a " single shot " forum, " black powder cartridge " forum, " paper patching "; et al.

1880 bolt action?????
Yeah! The gunsmith said it is the first one ever made!😄😄 Look, that is an ABSOLUTE GUESS, on my part. Either the notes from the Smith or the guy at the LGS mentioned a date. May have been the cartridge origin. That's why I added "or so". I know nuttin. That's why I'm askin and researching. Now, I'll search the "first bolt gun", and get back to you.OK That was easy. 1824, The first bolt action rifle was invented by Johan Nickolaus von Dreyse. Sounds like a German .Ok, cross checked the info. His " needle gun" was perfected and adopted by the Prussian Army in 1841. I just learned something.😀😀 Howdy back at ya, 357. I was over there last night. Thanks! Seems there is a guy making the cartridge. ASSRA had some interesting info, too.
