i picked up some old primers with a large lot of reloading stuff. one older package of CCI 400's was full and looked to be original. i primed 100 223 brass and set about to try some new loads in a rifle that i know is capable of good accuracy. first load produced a group about 1.25", second group produced about 1.5" third group was still over an inch. so, suspecting the primers i loaded the same load as the 3rd but in brass with "new" CCI 400's. group was much better, around 5/8" for 5 shots. first group was 52gr hpbt with h322, second group was 52gr hpbt with h335, third group was h335 with 40 nosler BT, fourth group was h335 with 40gr nosler BT. all brass was 2nd fired LC full length sized with small base dies. the brass was all out of one of my semi-auto rifles and the fired brass would not chamber in the bolt rifle i was loading for.
the "old" primers are copper colored, "new" primers are silver. does anyone know if and when cci 400's were copper colored?
