Old barrels/barrel stubs

Just curious if anyone had some old barrels or stubs laying around they wouldn’t mind parting ways with. Want to practice setting up and chambering a barrel on things that don’t matter before I attempt it on the real thing.

Buy yourself some 1.25” aluminum rod off ebay. Fit it up then part it off. Once you get good with the aluminum buy yourself some stainless rod. Too hard to set up stubs and old barrels only have 1 or 2 chambers before they get too small plus theres no sense in wasting time setting up on a taper just to practice shanking. On a straight 1.25” rod you can use the whole thing.

That’s the plan. Going to practice threading on anything I can get my hands on. Pvc, aluminum to start and then steel and SS. Basically cut the tenon on them and and do it until it’s almost second nature then move up to a stub

Thanks for all the help guys. Turns out @waltkrafft and I don't live too terribly far from one another so I'm going to make a road trip to meet up with him and gain some insight, oh yeah stubs too.

I work offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and just got on a new rig and while roaming around last night I found out we actually have a Grizzly G0709 on the rig. Now to see if they'll let me play with it any. If so, I'm going to go turn a piece or aluminum to 30mm so i have a bar to align the rings I'm looking at for my new rifle when i bed them

I've bought the cheap $57 green mountain barrels, raw unturned gunsmith edition barrels for making dies, making fire forming barrels, etc. After practicing they're a cheap route and actually not a bad barrel when done. They're no $300 barrel by any means but they'll do alright and you can make a fun project and hone your skills
