old 222 first tests

worked up to 21.5 H4198 and started to get a little feel in the bolt lift but no bad primers or shiny case head marks,,21.0 looked best and started out from just kissing at 2.265 and worked back .010 and .020,,gonna start at .010 and work out to .020 .002 at a time and see if it will tighten up,,

there was gusting wind today and could have caused some of this,,

I have always settled on 21gr+/- .1 and jump .020 and that is on about 5 or 6 222's

Try some 322 if you have it. 22.3 with 52 gr SMK's work for me well at 20 off

if you can find some old school bullets, like the 52 SMK and maybe even the old spire point in 50 grains, or better, some good match bullets, youmay find it shoots better.

i expected a little better than the targets indicated.

Wait a second! I totally misinterpreted those targets. I saw the dot and thought it was a hole! I have to wear my glasses more! The 20 off sure seemed to work...

the 20x Lyman has a dot a lot smaller than anything I have had,,,a dot the size of the bullet hole is plenty big,,the wire to the dot is almost invisible and really dont see how it hasnt been broken,,glass isnt 100 % over the years but usable,

those dots were installed by an outfit in Birmingham Al, I had a 1/16 dot in 2 of my lymans as the original cross hairs were big. cant remember their name at the moment, lots of shooters used them. I had the same set up for years and traded it to a gun store in Atlanta.

the rifle you have is truly a typical build/scope etc for BR in the 70-74 period.

you will love it, pat it and have fun, as it will last a long time.

I had the same problem with the 53 VMAX anything with a 1-14 twist, I'm guessing that's what you have? I have a Marlin 322 in 222 sometime ago I tried 40gr VMAX BT's after about 12 shots they were completely missing the target I attributed that to the Micro groove rifling getting dirty and the small amout of bearing surface on the 40gr bullet. I then loaded some Sierra 50gr spitzer FB with the lead tip, with 22.5 grs of 8208xbr unbelievable how accurate that little rifle shoots.

PA is on to something forgotten n the days since the advent of the tipped bullets. Some of the older spitzers perform very well and seem to tune easily in the 14 barrels. In the 22-250 my spire point 55 grain cheap bullets (can't recall what company made them) outshot the tipped bullets for accuracy, but i went to tipped for the BC which at distance meant more woodchucks for me. In the 222 BC is really not THAT important, since shots are generally 300 yards or less. Accuracy really matters and those old FB spitzers, which can be had for very good prices, are great. I like the SX Blitz, and the Hornady 50 gr SP.
