Oklahoma

My son has been accepted to Oklahoma Wesleyan University, in Bartlesville, the Green Country of OK.
Any shooters from the area that can tell me about the hunting, the area, the availability of shooting opportunities?

Howdy !

Their's a 1,000yd capable range called " Red Castle " tulsaredcastlegunclub.com/welcome-to-trcgc/ . Not sure if they are accepting new members ?
It's NW of Tulsa, close to Skiatook.

There is a 50, 100, 300yd range called " Happy Hollow " near, Kelleyville exit off I-44 West, just a few miles West of Sapulpa.
You can shoot all day for $10, and your 11th trip there is free.

Tulsa's Expo Center hosts the world's largest gunshow.... Wanenmacher http://www.tulsaarmsshow.com
It is huge. Tulsa also hosts other gunshows, throughout the year.

Oklahoma is " open carry " , and one can even secure a lifetime permit; if so desired.
Here, we are " clinging to our guns.... AND our religion " !!!

Tulsa and Broken Arrow have many gunshops, " Dong's " being one. http://www.dongsguns.com/ , see also http://hellcatarmory.com.
There's https://www.jerrysreloading.com/ in East Tulsa.

Another goodie: http://billssportinggoodsok.com , in Will Roger's hometown of Claremore.
You can take-in the U.S.' largest private collection of firearms ( over 10,000 ) while you are there.

3-gun competition: www.usshootingacademy.com . This outfit also has indoor shooting facilities, as does http://www.2ashootingcenter.com .
A lot of the deer hunting takes place in SE Oklahoma, near the Arkansas border. It is " Squatchy ", down that way !

357...wow, THAT is a detailed response.

thanks!

How is the PD, varmint hunting and flyfishing down that way? I enjoy small game, not into deer etc. And BR or long range rifle shooting?

fairly conservative area I take it? (I too am holding on to guns and religion...only behind enemy lines in NY)

thanks again

Howdy, again !

Fishing: They just finished the 2016 " Bassmaster Classic " , @ Grand Lake, near Tulsa.
Pretty good WX for fishin' in early March.

PD's - There are some towns in Oklahoma. I think a lot of landowners keep these close to their chest, and take care of matters; themselves. I know of one town right @ the first toll booth into Oklahoma, on the drive up from Wichita Falls, TX. Kansas to the North, and New Mexico to the West; have PDs.

Bartlesville does have a 100 yard range that also accommodates shotgun and bow, you do have to do an application process.

There is some public hunting land on Copan lake 5 mins, north of bville, and also some good hunting west of town if you like to hunt hogs. There's many many hogs on pond creek and Caney river just north of Hulah lake. Not any Prarie dogs that I know of in the Bartlesville area. There is some good coyote hunting. Instead of Prarie dogs most people shoot turtles....lol. Sports World in Tulsa OK is another good gun store, of course Bass Pro Shop is in Broken Arrow. And the duck hunting is actually pretty good in the area, especially if you like pond jumping. The fishing is awesome in most any farm pond or creek, river or lake.

Here's a link to Oklahoma dept. Of wildlife page. There's normally a lot of help there.

There's also, reportedly, a 1000 yd range just west of Bartlesville, and to ammend Fred's post; the sportsmens club now has a 200 yd range as well. Also as a member of the club you get wholesale pricing on reloading supplies from Graf's.
20 miles west of Bartlesville is a place to fish for Trout, but be careful shooting at Turtles in Okla, I think they are protected. Good Quail, Turkey, Dove, and Pheasant(controlled hunts) or in the wild in western Okla.

I failed to mention the supposed "200 yard" range...one of my disgruntled arguments with the club reps...they call it 200 but it's actually 185 yards.
Here's a link to the turtles...just don't shoot the ones listed as endangered or threatened. Other than that to me it appears you can shoot them.
PS, I like the nuisance part....

I didn't know that about the "200 yd" range. I've never shot it, mostly shot pistol at the club. Yeah, the nuisance part pretty much allows landowners to "manage" the Turtle problems themselves. My neighbor "manages" his Turtle problem with a .22, that is until the overflow pipe on the watershed got plugged with their remains.

Me thinks the boy is going to like OK!!!

Guys, thanks a bunch. Marking this thread and links for him.

You didn't mention it however there is some great Waterfowl hunting at the Hackberry Flats. Been there several times and it always cost me money for the mounts! ☺️

Are there any prairie dogs or hogs near Dibble?

honestly I'm not really sure about that area the ones that friends of mine have shot have always been out in Western Oklahoma towards the Panhandle
Thanks for the quick response. Was it prairie dogs, hogs or both they shoot in Western OK.?
