Oh boy

Oh boy, yea thats right. Sorry, but this is not gun related but is computer related. I have a boat load of passwords at home and work. 1 day about a month ago i went to get into my yahoo email and it popped up to ask me my yahoo name and password. Well ;D, the password was deleted from my mind. I tried everything to get back in but no luck. Man what a drag as i have so many contacts and saved passwords for many other forums. I think i am screwed. Never wrote any down and have had them stored away in my brain so far without any problems. So yesterday i found some numbers and was calling off the internet that said yahoo help that i found. 1 fellow said he was going to send something to a new email that i created in hopes i would find someone to email me a temporary password. No such luck and never happened. Now i am not computer savy and have several times like i have done to some cell phones i have, wanted to smash the thing and open the door and throw it into the woods just like a few cell phones that met their demize and is out their. Just could not do it as it is my lifeline to all you gun buddies :) So......i get a hold of a lady today and like the rest that i spoke with have a hard time understanding but think i am making headway. 2/3s through this i find out she is in India ( who i am speaking to ) and following her directions. During our conversation i am doing what she is telling me to do and now she is on MY computer taking it over and seeing everything on it. She then proceeds to tell me their will be a 1 time fee of 50.00 bucks and thats when i started clicking off all the stuff she put on their and shut down my computer hoping something else does not evolve from this and then hung up the phone. Then she is trying to call back and i just hang up. Right now i am so pi**** that their is not some simple solution to get my password back so i do not lose everything. To be honest, i really hate computers and phones as all they do is create problems and lots of problems.

Maybe I am not understanding this, but it sounds like you had passwords stored in Yahoo somehow? I get forgetting your Yahoo password, but you should be able to reset that right on line. I may be able to help, but want to understand exactly where all your passwords were kept. You should get a computer password vault, which has a master password to get into. These can be stored on-line so you can access from any computer or smart phone, or the vault can be kept on your computer only.

Phil,
I know what my email ID is but do not remember my password that it is asking for. Without my password i can not get into my yahoo email that is tuckerd80@yahoo.com. In my email i have saved passwords from other forums and places plus all my email contacts from here and elsewhere. If i start to forget these passwords for some reason i will never no what they are because i can not get into my email to retrieve them.

Ok, stop panic time. Go to Yahoo email and to the sign on paege. put in your ID and click the forgot password link. They will ask for an email that is on the account. I am going to guess that you only have one email on the account and that is the .yahoo email? Or you can't sign into yahoo.com front page to go to the email section?

From Yahoo: Recovering a lost or forgotten password

Resolution

If you forget the password for your Yahoo! account, visit the Yahoo! password helper.
•To ensure the security of your account, please understand that we cannot reset your password if you are unable to verify your identity correctly.
•Once the password helper has verified your identity, a "Reset Your Password" link will be sent to your alternate email address.
- If you do not have an alternate email address on file, you can verify your idenity using either your mobile phone (or other SMS device), or answering the security question you have on the account.
•For the protection of your account information, we do not have access to passwords. For this reason, we are unable to remind you of or verify your current or previous password.

Once your password is restored, go to your Account Info page and make sure your personal information is up-to-date, including the contact information under "Choose how Yahoo! contacts you". If you have not entered your mobile phone number, add it now. This will make it much easier to verify your identity and recover your password, should this happen in the future.

Hope this helps.

Now for the chastisement. NEVER store passwords in emails. First they can be hacked, second...well you know that one. If you have a word processor like MS Word. Create a document called Passwords and put your ID's and PPW on that page. Save it as a document in your "My Documents". THEN, if you have the ability, burn a CD with that document on it. And redo it everytime you add a PPW or account. Just open the doc, add and then save...safety.

The lady in India should have been more up front with you very early on in the conversation that she was operating a 'pay for' service based on remote control of your desktop. Been there, done that - one did the same thing to me over a Dell PC problem. I did the same thing you did, slam dunk!

I hope you can get your yahoo password reset.....

I don't have a Yahoo account, so my first reply was generic. Glad someone here could walk you through specific steps. You should be fine. But as another recommended, storing passwords in e-mail is just asking for it. In a big bad way. If you save the passwords on a document, then name it something that isn't obvious, like "Passwords.doc". Maybe "6mmbrloads.doc" would be less attractive to a hacker. In Word, you can password protect the file as well. Not very secure, but another wall of protection. You can use things like Norton Password Vault, Dashlane (both free) and a multitude of others for very safe storage of passwords. Some will generate strong passwords for you and store automatically. They will all pretty reliably log you in automatically on any website, once you store the login and password. You only have to remember one password. Make it something you can remember but others will struggle with. Like $6mmBR5/13600Y to represent an expensive ($) 6mmbr rifle (6mmbr), that you got in May of 2013 (5/13) and shoot at 600 yards (600Y).

And change the master password often!

If you're going to save passwords and such on a disc, it would be much easier to do so in a flash/jump drive. they're cheap and plug in to a USB socket on your computer when needed. I save pictures and videos on to them and put in a bank vault. Also I back up everything like that in a Google document in my Google account. I highly recommend Google over the others for email and ... basically a better experience overall.

I've used webmail (i.e., Gmail), and just don't care for it. Guess I am old fashioned and like an e-mail client, like Microsoft Outlook (not Outlook.com). - Phil

Anyone know how to set up outlook?

I use Outlook 2010. This is not Outlook Express or Outlook.com. These are all Microsoft products. Which are you inquiring about? Microsoft Outlook comes with some Microsoft Office products. By itself, it is about $130 and is an e-mail client. That meaning, it manages e-mails coming from another source (i.e. Comcast). Outlook Express I believe is no longer available, but was free, and is replaced with Microsoft Live Mail. Outlook.com is free and is a web based mail (if I recall) that looks similar to other Outlook products.

I might be able to help depending on what product and version you have.
