Off Topic...Pistol Ammo

Toolbreaker

Gold $$ Contributor
Just picked up a Sig P226 yesterday in .40 S&W. I've been away from handguns for a little bit now...maybe 25 years? Anyways, anyone have any suggestions for decent plinking/practice ammo to get me some time behind this handgun? IIRC, I used to use Winchester white box years ago. Is this still decent box ammo? I checked Midway, and they list 117 different brands/bullets :o. Thanks much,

Jim

I'm not much of a pistol guy but I recently bought a Springfield XDS in 9mm. The Winchester white box has functioned flawlessly through it. Seems to be OK by me.

For practicing/plinking I picked up 2000 once fired brass off a pistol forum for about $80 shipped. Then just use whatever bullet you want. I usually just practice with 180 gr lead swc. With brass, bullets, primers and powder this usually works out to about half price of the cheapest boxed ammo you'll find (depending on what bullet you choose).

Hey Jim,
if you are looking for a low cost and low recoil round consider nosler 135gr jhp. I shoot a lot of them in my Glock 23 g4. I do carry hornady critical defense rounds when I am not practicing. I have a decent recipe if you are interested.
cheers,
Doc
and +1 on what dave said about the speer bullets

First off, great choice of handgun. Sig makes a fine piece of machinery :)

I have found that weights below 180gr seem to work best in the 40 S&W. The 155gr to 165gr bullets being my favorite. Good balance of speed, power, and accuracy. Just my experience and opinion though.

I've tried a lot of bullets in my 40 and other handguns. I now use Hornady XTP bullets in most my handguns and plan on testing them in others in the future as well. Have the 300gr XTP in my 44 mag, 180gr XTP in my 10 mm Auto, and the 155gr XTP in my 40 S&W. Don't know why, but I have had excellent accuracy results with the XTP bullet in every handgun I've tried so far. They are ideal for self defense, hunting, and accuracy. What more could you ask for? :)

If not reloading, I would suggest the new HPR line of handgun ammo. They use XTP bullets in some of their loads and it is priced fairly. Always get great accuracy with their ammo if I decide to buy instead of reload.

Thanks for the suggestions, guys. Friend of mine has a stash of 40 S&W, so he said I was welcome to test drive a few different loads of his. I'll see what it likes hopefully in a week or two. I'm really not wanting to get into reloading for this just yet. I'd like to see how well (and often) I like shooting it first. That'll give me an idea on the volume I'll be looking at. Thanks again for the suggestions.

I will more often just buy handgun ammunition as well. I don't shoot handguns much and for the cost per round and the accuracy some factory ammo produces, I just don't feel the need to reload for them at times. I have all the dies, brass, powder, and bullets for each handgun caliber I own just in case, but sometimes it's easier to go pick up a cheap box of 50 rounds and call it good. I have too many rifles to reload for as it is.

White box is fine for plinking, Rem/UMC is also fine for general shooting.

Basically anything you find is going to be O.K. Some will be a bit underpowered and dirty, but all of it should run fine.

Good Lick,

RMD
