Odd thought of the day..

So, here's my odd thought of the day. I purchased a Athlon Cronos to replace my beloved Midas Tac. In terms of Specs they have identical...
Objective lens size. Tube diameter. Elevation and windage max adjustments. Cronus is just a little shorter and heavier.

I'm basically removing the Midas and installing the Cronus. Same rings. Making sure my eye relief is good and it's plumb.

Can you see where I'm going with this yet?

What are the odds I can set my windage and elevation on the Cronus identical to the Midas and be pretty darn close??

Yeah... I got a lot of time on my hands. :)

I'll tell you what I do to set up a scope. I use the vise on my rolling tool box to hold the barrel and using blocks of wood and cedar shingles as wedges to adjust the height of the stock, I bore sight the rifle on my neighbors well head about 60 yards away, install the scope, adjust the scope to center on the well head, done.

In your case center the old scope on something a decent distance away, replace the scope with the new one and adjust that to your target.

I would say there will be some difference. Tying it is the only way to find out. Let us know what and how it works between the two and you old settings.

What i do is put a chamber bore sighter in. Then shine it on the side of a house and see where it actually is. Then depending if the scope has a calibrated moa reticle or not. if it is a dot i then note what i have to dial to center the laser dot over the scope dot. Mount the new scope and first center the dot and then dial in the new scope to the reverse of the old scope. That usually puts it in an inch or so.

If it is a calibrated reticle i just note where the dot is and mount the next scope and dial it to the same offset point the first scope was

Ok Guys so we have our answer... kinda sorta. Let me explain.

It was very easy to get my base numbers off my Athlon Midas Tac. The turrets are easy and "predictable " to turn. So after recording those numbers I transposed them to the Athlon Cronus. Kinda sorta.

By that I mean to say the Cronus turrets are STIFF. Combined with, to me seemed an uneven force to rotate them made it to be a PITA. Now granted I'm a 60yo man who has worked with his hands for a living. So when I say my fingers were sore when I got done consider the source. Also consider windage was the worse of the 2 in terms of precise countable "clicks".

So... the POI shifted 2 clicks high and 13 clicks right. ( 1/4 MOA adjustments).
More Cronus ramblings vs the Midas for anyone still reading.

The 56mm sunshade will not interchange between the Midas and the Cronus.

The Athlon brand sunshade for the Cronus is a semi gloss finish. The scope itself is matt finish. So yes, that might bother some.

Did I mention the turrets, I think I did. LOL

I have been shooting the Athlon Ares 15-60 a lot this year. It's rectile is very fine. So on 29x the Cronus rectile looks like it was drawn with a crayon by comparison. LOL

The first 4 or so illumination settings on the rectile don't do much of anything. Today was overcast, so on a sunny day it might extend to the first 5 settings.

The glass IS nice and clear. Better then the Midas Tac.

So, at the end of the day for the 1100$ clams I got..

Better glass. How much better ? TBD as I shoot different conditions.

Downgraded turrets. That is just my opinion and maybe they will "break in".

Perhaps this should be about how much a steal the 5-25x56 Tac is vs my initial disappointment in the Cronus.

YMMV

So as an update on my method this week I wanted to put my spare Nightforce NXS scope on my AR15 match rifle. I currently had an EPL4 Arken on it. So I put my 223 chamber laser in and sighted it at the side of the house 2 doors down. The red dot was 0 elevation and 2 moa right. I then remounted my NXS in the same mount and set the elevation adn windage turrets to mimic the same place as the Arken scope. Just a note, my NXS has a MOAR-T reticle. But I could have used the windage turrret to do the 2 MOA. Estimated time was 15 minutes to do everything.

Went to the range today to get it really zero'd. First shot was 3 inches low at 100 yards and 2 inches left. I don't think I could bore sight it any closer
