you know the old saying an odd thing happened on the way to the forum :D
i was using some factory remington 270 bronze pt 130 grain to fire form....
i had two boxes of 20 and after doing the first i noticed that one didn't form the crisp shoulder..... upon examining it closer i found a funny hole on the shoulder...
it was a little longer than an eighth of an inch and it looked like a worm ate the brass or someone had a plazma cutter and cut it out... not jagged at all and in a stretched out s.......
anyway went to the next box thinking it was a million to one chanch of it ever happening again...... yup another one in the second box....... same shape length and look......
now this is far from my first rodeo..... i have fire formed over 3000 brass for the 270 ackleys and have never seen this before..... i like the way the rem. brass forms
even on the first try and that is why i use it for the 270s
i use different brass for the other rifles because of the accuracy....
anyone have this problem with the rem. brass in fire forming

Not completly relevant but a friend just bought 200 new Remington 25-06 pieces.

Literally one in 5 had extremely loose primer pockets. He isolated some, loaded and shot them. First 5 leaked at the primer. That was enough.

His conclusion - That lot of new Remington brass is junk.

Maybe there's more?

Had a piece of Lupua do the same thing. It started about half way down the neck and continued to the shoulder. Looked like it was cut with a very fine torch. Come to think about it, those gases in the cartridge are a torch. Just chocked it up to a flaw in the brass. Never had another one. I often wondered if there was a small piece of material trapped between the bullet and the case that may have caused the problem.

It is usually not trapped debris.Trapped debris leaves a dent most of the time.
The inclusions you are seeing are pretty normal stuff when Ackley Improving cases and I see them regularly.

My question would be , how old are the rounds? Wouldn't shock me at all if they are 30-40 years old.

lynn... did this happen with more than remington brass.....
i ackley improve with remington, nosler custom, winchester and federal and do it more than alot ffor several rifles and have never had it happen before.....

larry..... these are factory ammo and were purchased a little over 3 years ago.....
and have fired formed with the same ammo and new brass for several thousand of the remington and never had any kind of glich.....

I have see this before with brand new brass used in .308 Remington Core-Lokt ammo. I'm not much of a Remington brass fan as Winchester has always treated me better on the domestic components.

One thing that I have wonder though about these types of cracks is whether a piece of copper from a copper brush isn't trapped in the chamber causing this.

If he contacts Remington with the lot #, I'm sure they will make things right

Ha! Didn't realize this thread was this old. My answer still stands though. I had bought 200 rounds of Rem. 22-250 brass that was all the same lot. My rifle was a Rem. 700. Of the first 20 rounds I fired, 5 had split necks. I sent the split brass to Remington along with the load info. They sent me 200 rounds of new brass, no questions asked.
Best of all was, I never had another split neck out of any of the brass.

Brass is brass. Metal can do funny things, no matter the maker. Like another posted said, I too had some Lapua and Norma do the same on one lot I had bought a few years back.
Just something that occurs on occasion in our hobby of reloading.

Hahaha it’s always a good kick. I have done it my share plenty of times. Just glad it wasn’t me this go round

I just recently blew out PPU 7.62x54R into short necked 8x56R, which is quite stretching out of the shoulder. Four out of 25 cases had little cat's eye shaped holes on the shoulder after firing a very mild load of Unique with gas checked cast bullets. It's just he nature of the potential problems with blowing out brass cases.
