Odd Savage Target Action and Target Accu Trigger Question

Hoping someone can tell me what it was that I noticed today.

I have a new Model 12 LRP which up until today the Accu Trigger was nicely set at 1 lb and never locked up even with getting very aggressive with closing the bolt. It was really very nice.

When I was finishing up shooting this morning, I noticed a little clearish/white rubber pad fall out from underneath the bolt handle. I picked it up and studied it and found that it had come from a slot with a "peg hole" underneath the bolt (right where the handle starts). I was thinking that it was to buffer the metal to metal contact on the bolt area and the action.

I was able to put it back in its place, but it wouldn't stay. The peg leg wouldn't keep it in place any more. So, I put it somewhere and now I can't find it…..still shouldn't be that big of deal. I didn't think any more of it until I got home. After cleaning, I closed the bolt and sure enough the trigger locked. In fact it would lock every time if I wasn't VERY gentle closing the bolt. I checked the trigger and it was at 8 Oz….what the……..!!!!

So I took it apart and adjusted the trigger to 1.5 lbs. It's back in business, but you can lock up the trigger if you get really aggressive closing the bolt. That NEVER happened with that rubber pad.

Anyway, I hope someone can tell me what that pad is for. It surely can't be Savage's answer to their locking trigger issues……it's such a cheesy odd part.

I've heard and read about the trigger locking up issue, but nobody has mentioned the rubber pad missing. That makes me wonder if other's problems are pointing to that rubber pad. It could easily fall out without the shooter noticing…..I just happened to get lucky when I saw it fall out. It also can't be designed to be permanent as it would have just been a matter of time for it to fall out.

I believe the pad is there so when you close the bolt the cocking cam doesnt get slammed causing the lock up.It is similar to kelbly actions where you close the bolt and then lift the handle ever so lightly so the cocking piece doesnt drag on the reciever. The savage pta like mine doesnt have one and if I set it as light as they claim, you have to close it gently. The rubber baby buggy bumper is there answer to the problem. If you call them they will probably send you a new one that should be super glued back in.Put a touch of glue on it and insert it in the slot and close the bolt gently to hold it in place.I would bet you could make one out say, brass and it would do the same darn thing.

One fell off my M12 BR. That piece is so poorly designed and poorly attached that I figured there is no way it was intended to be there permanently. I threw mine away and have not had any issues.

On all of my savage pta rifles I replaced the pad after all fell out with a little piece of leather boot lace.Lasts for years and works .Alittle super glue on the leather piece and you are good to go.

Good to know guys…..will look at replacing it with something else. I may even ask savage to send me a replacement and super glue the heck out of it.

Maybe the real fix will be a Rifle Basix SAV-2 ;)

Basically the rubber bugger you found is a band aid fix, that Savage has employed to remind a problem with the overly heavy BT bolt handle and the shock caused with closing the bolt handle, that will trip the light trigger. (The older guns did not have this rubber bugger.) You may think this sounds crazy, the easiest fix is to get a lighter weight bolt handle like one made by Sharp Shooters Supply. You could always place a bead of clear RTV on the area and fix the old bolt handle if your happy with that you have. Merry Christmas

Good Morning. I believe the pad is to stop bolt jump when the trigger is pulled.
I had a f class that was missing the pad , did not have a problem with trigger lock up, I did order some extra pads from Savage.
If you pm me I will send you one
Good Shooting Gene

All good advice and knowledge here…..thanks guys!!

Does anyone know if this issue is still present with a SSS or Rifle Basix replacement triggers?

It wouldn't be an issue if I was shooting off a bench or F-Class stuff, but I don't. The tactical type of shooting comps that I do are subject to some pretty aggressive bolt manipulation and a lock up would really suck.

As far as the SSS competition trigger there is not problem, with it you can drop the gun on the butt, and the safety will slide back but the trigger will not trip. My experience with the Rifle basix sav 2 trigger is not so good, every one I have seen if you knock on the stock they will trip.

Put a Rifle Basics on my target action when the Accutrigger quit working. After much frustration trying to use it in the 4 oz. range, multiple "go-offs" closing the bolt, I had to re-set the weight. All the fussing and re-adjusting just did not work reliably.

It now works at 6.5 oz. Been safe the last 100 rds.
