Odd blown primer problem

I have blown 2 primers like this in a factory 700, 300 Wm. Load is 72 gn rl22, 200 accubond, fed mag primer, old nosler brass for 2900 fps. The load is not hot and doesnt show pressure. It appears that the primer cracked all the way down the side, but there was no leakage around the primer to indicate a loose pocket. They arent tight, but I have shot much looser. I assume the primer cracked then blew, may be the other way around. These are old primers, probably from the 80's and the brass is used, but that shouldnt matter. It etched the bolt face pretty good, I will send it to gre-tan after hunting season and I'm sure I fixed the issue. Anybody seen this?

I bet the folks who make the primers have seen that during their testing. Have you contacted them?

I would suggest that it may just be a primer problem because I had it happen in different brass under different loads in different calibers so it wasn't the rifles, or the brass or the loads.

My issue was with Winchester large rifle primers as shown in the PB slide show above. I did an internet search, found I wasn't the only one so I contacted Olin and they were aware of the problem. They were good to work with made it right by me. YMMV.

They are federal 215 magnum primers in a red sleeve with black and green diagonal stripe running across the package. There is no sign of leakage around the outside of the primer like I would expect to see with a loose pocket. I have ran this load up 2 grains higher than I am at now. That is when I saw pressure, I am fairly sure it is not a pressure issue.

Looks like defective primer cups then. All primer brands may rupture if a defective cup. Mine were Rem 9 1/2 back in the 70's. About 10% of them would blow out, ever with very light loads.

How many rounds have you fired with re 22 ? I shot a 6.5 -284 using re 22 and it gave me bad carbon build up which led to pressure problems.

About 100. Gets cleaned every 15 or so, and I like brushes and JB. I don't think its carbon build up. I will try different primers first. Who makes a mag primer with a good thick cup?

CCI and Russian primers the Russian primers are hard to seat sometimes.

Sounds like your near or above a max load for your rifle. You don't need to push the limit.
