o ring size?

For you that use an o ring under your dies what size o ring do you use?

Also do any of you remove the locking clip for the shell holder so it can somewhat float?
If so do you know how to remove it from a Redding big boss 2?

Thanks

#17 , I use them under all my dies , great for fine tuning and removing the dies from the press . I leave the shellholder as is , they have wiggle room to center . Have you tried the Redding Competition shellholders ?

I've had good results removing the C clip over the last year or so. I do tie a rubber band around the press shell holder slot, just to keep from chasing the shell holders.

Quit using the o-ring under dies, wasn't making any difference for me.

3/4" ID, 15/16" OD (3/32" cross-section) has been my choice for years.

13/16" ID fits easier but tends to get squeezed out whether 3/32" or 1/8" cross-section. This is for 7/8x14 dies.

And I've removed the shell holder retainer on my 3 presses.

The circlip retainer spring will pry out with a pair of long nose pliers and a flat blade screw driver.... usually just the driver will do. Goes the same on most Redding presses I have done it to. Just be careful not to mark the ram.

I also use the Lee lock rings with their rubber o-ring and they let the die float and self center in the press.

The shell holders should allow the rim to float and let the case move, if your shell holder is a tight fit on the rim try another shell holder.

I like not having the retaining clip on the shell holder - but quit using the o-ring in favor of just having a loose die and using a sharpie to put a registration mark on small strip of masking tape I place on the die and lock ring. Keep an eye on the lines and you have the best scenario with a threaded die, I think.

I never used an O-Ring under my dies, if using an O-Ring, how do you tighten your dies?
Does the headspace vary when using an O-Ring under your full length resizing dies to bump .001 - .002" , since you have some flexibility up and down?

Think about it. All the lock ring really has to do is to keep the die from rotating in the press to hold its setting. The threads take the up and down pressure from sizing. The easy way to do the float is to use a Lee lock ring.

Maybe I've gone too simple----most of the time, I don't
use a lock ring. Haven't noticed any rotation.

Some time I use a Lee lock ring------no problems with
this either but don't see any improvement.

There was a time when some would jam the lock ring
when the ram was at the top of the stroke and the die was under compression with a case in it. I never knew if this made any difference.

on my dies I use hornady lock rings with the straight edge that will take a tool, I use this to get the same "torque" and therefore the same position ( marked ) in my press. The shell plate moves freely and does the aligning.

I use the Hornady Lock n Load conversion system with Hornady lock rings in my Lee Classic Cast press. Since this system incorporates an O ring, does this provide the same float as an O ring under the lock ring in a non quick change system?

If using the O ring, you just hand tighten it? If making it tight or not tight enough change the headspace at all since you may turn it in a little more or a little less? I need to try this sometime if it improves accuracy, but I don't seem to have much accuracy issues. Just a thought I could experiment sometime. I have the Hornady SUR Lock rings, will this work or do I need the lock rings with the o ring groove on the underside of it?

Years ago, I knew a fellow who had a number of Lee dies and lock rings, who wanted to have conventional lock rings. I traded him for a few. One thing that I do not like about the Lee rings is that there is no way to secure them on the die. I figured out a way around that. I run a Hornady or other split ring up high on the die, followed by a Lee. After the Lee is exactly where I want it, with the die in the press and set, I hold it and the die with one hand, and spin the Hornady ring down into contact with it. Tightening the split ring, with an Allen wrench jams the Lee so that neither will move on the die.

Just a little compression of the O ring, with finger and thumb is enough. The nice thing is that you don't have to loosen or retighten anything to adjust the bump slightly. Your compression of the O ring should be such that you can cover all possible adjustments and still have the die hold its place.
