NRA Shooter classification question

Shooter Classifications...Why does the NRA class F open and F TR in the same class? Shouldn't they be separate?
Just asking...
Thanks again

They shoot the same target but at the matches I have been to they try and keep each shooter with others of the same rifle type. There are always two F-class categories for scores though - they do not compete against each other. Much like match rifle can compete on the same target as Service Rifle but are separated when tabulating the scores at the end of the day.

If less than 5 per class they are then merged together...F TR competing with F Open. That has happened at matches I shot in. Including the state championship.

This isnt an NRA thing. If you don't have enough paying participants for a class, you can't afford to give class awards to every group. It happens this way in archery also. When I used to travel to archery competitions, they all used what was called a 369 basis. You had to have 3 shooters in a class before a 1st place was awarded, 6 shooters before a 2nd place, and 9 shooters for a 3rd. In smaller rifle matches there usually aren't class awards given at all, just top overall shooter. State matches may give separate class awards, but I don't believe that it's required.

I get that...it's just tough to beat a 284 or the like cannons with the 223 or 308 on bipods. That's all....

True. Also, it is tough to beat an AR match rifle with an M 14 service rifle.

If you are both Master class, that means you both shoot 96.5-97.99%. Theoretically, you could beat the open shooter who is the same class as you. I understand open has the advantage of ballistics and equipment, but 97% is 97%, no matter the equipment.

Consider this.....

The F-Open record for 20 shots at 1,000 yards is 200-15X

The F-T/R National record for the same match is 200-12X

Not much difference there.

There is an advantage in open, but not as much as some make it out to be. You still have to read the wind correctly. :)

Oops! Thanks for correcting that. :) Who owns it anyway?

Well the part that ticks me off is they do not recognize 1000 yard Benchrest. And we donate a 1000 Dollars a year to them! And most of or members belong to the NRA. I think shooting is shooting no matter what you shoot.

Yes we were the first 1000 yard club in the Country, we are are own sanctioning body, but I always figured we were all in this together! Would be nice to read about 1000 yard benchrest in the American Riflemen. People are always asking why they don't put that in there magazines. Isn't that one of the reasons why we don't get P.S. anymore, Nothing to write about! :-\

Thanks, Steve
