NRA Mid-Range National Rifle Matches, Camp Atterbury

The Mid-range Rifle matches were completed today at Camp Atterbury. The matches were fired on Silver Mountain Electronic targets. From what I gathered and experienced myself, there were very few problems with the target system. Most of the problems had been worked out during the "Across the Course" phase. Out of 300 record shots and additional sighters taken for the individual and team match, I had one shot with a STAR and 1 shot did not register. Both problems were quickly resolved. Matches were done early in the afternoon except for one day, Fog delayed the start on that day. On the last day, 3 x 600, shooting was completed about 12:30 PM. Competitors did not have any duties other than shooting and scoring. With the relays set up for a 3 person rotation, 2 nd and 3 rd shooter had a rest period before it was there turn to shoot.

I personally was very satisfied with the Mid-range matches and plan to attend again in 2023.

On a personal note, i want to extend a "Congratulations" to all the shooters who excelled in there classifications and in the overall match winner.

I had the privilege and pleasure to score for the eventual National Champion, SSG John Coggshall, US Army National Guard. SSG Coggshall fired a 2399 with 189 x's. out of a possible 2400 points. SSG Coggshall set a new National Match record in 4 days with varying conditions, of wind, rain and temperatures in the 90's .

Thanks to the NRA, Silver Mountain Targets, Volunteers, Camp Atterbury personal who assisted in making these matches a success.

There were some interesting times during Midrange. Squadded practice was cancelled as a paratroop drop was miscalculated, and a trooper took out the communications for range control as he made a opportunistic landing far from the DZ. The next day we were given unlimited sighters on each yard line to make up for it, but got rained out as we completed the 500 yard match.

That was ok as we simply shot four 600 yard stages the next day. After the fog cleared just before 10am.

Ben Cleland of the AMU shot a new National Record at 300 yards with a 200-43. The old record was 200-30.

Team match day got hot. Most were roasting by the 600 yard stage. It was hot the following day as well.

The last day the NRA had purchased seven pop up shades for us, and we put them to good use. It was actually quite pleasant under them.

As noted above, the targets were sorted and working well the whole week. There were no more than the usual dropped shots.

That last day we were off the line before 1:00.

I’ll be back again.
