Coyotes aren't what I'd call plentiful here but I could call in at least one every weekend if I put in the work. I wouldn't call them real predators here either. Nothing but cotton tails and field mice to eat. It's been super hot and now the humidity is here also. 6am it was 87 deg and 78% but I still decided to go get one. I only stay in one spot for about 15 minutes. I hunt a huge river bottom close to home. It's sort of like a mini Grand Canyon. It runs north south so I can keep close to the east side which puts me in the shade and the dogs looking into the sun. The wind always blows west to east so that works to. I tried 3 different spots using a rabbit in distress call. No luck. Gave up to hot. Walking back to the truck next to an alfalfa field I spotted movement. Ears sticking up at about 150. Just then it did the pounce thing. Popped up with a mouse in it mouth and saw me at the same time. It took off toward the canyon, I flipped the bypod out and went prone waiting for it to clear the field and get to the rim of the canyon. I know coyotes, they always have to stop and take a last look before going over, or into the brush. Sure enough he stoped broadside at about 225. I lined up perfect an squeezed away. Nothing! Pushed on the safety and nothing. Coyote stepped over the edge. Empty chamber! Mike

This is an older picture but gives you an idea of my mini Grand Canyon. Notice the cave. Alfalfa fields up top. They flood irrigate them. The water seeps out the Canyon wall forming caves. You'd think they would make nice dens but not so, full of rattlesnakes. The coyotes dig there dens in the sand inside that mesquite tree on the bottom. BTY can you see a chicken in the picture? Mike

Rookie, rookie, rookie...mistake....someone had to say it!
Im sure there are tons more who have done the same whether it be varminting or regular hunting but wont admit it.
Yup Ive done it also, just didn't chamber the round, mag was full though, all you can do is cuss at yourself and slap yer forehead.
Heres one worse, I took a guy out calling with me, put a coyote in his lap at 60 yards. No shot WTH Im thinking, well he didn't even load his magazine and fumbled trying to do it whilst wylie E was headed out of dodge.

Happen to me, took a friend's teenage son out one night back a few years ago, snowing and cold, pulled into field got out and thought I'll hit locator call to see if anything would answer. Two answer couple hundred yards away in next field. I run the call out into the hay field and run to a round bale 50 yards away. Pull up rifle look to back of field and dog is looking our way, flip safety and pull trigger to only here click! Cycle bolt only to get click. Damn forgot to put mag in, by the time i figured out what the problem was 2 dog was leaving field. But a lesson well learned, i don't call from where i park and first thing i do after getting everything out of truck is load the rifle. 5spd is right, if it hasn't happened to you , your not fessing up to it or haven't hunted much. But these make for good stories, and we learn to hone our skills. I always say you got to have a few get away for broodstock!

You got some nice weather there! Spend a week in texas. End of sept and oct you still sweat your azz in the shade in a bow stand hunting..

Human error happens most often when you are out of your routine. This wasn't your routine shot since you weren't calling and didn't expect to see a dog. I don't know when you normally load and unload your rifle but you do. Somehow this non-routine shot caused you to miss that step. Not a big deal hunting.

But this is a good reminder for any defensive weapon. Some keep the chamber loaded, some keep it unloaded. But whatever you do, do it the same EVERY TIME. I prefer a loaded chamber and no safety so that no matter what happens under extreme stress, when you pull the trigger it will go boom.

If you ever find yourself wondering if there is one in the chamber you're doing it wrong.
