Bought a few rimfires lately, some old Mossbergs a 46MB and a 144. Also bought a CZ455 Varmint in 22LR. After several trips to the range and trying several types of top tier ammo I'm thoroughly disappointed with this CZ, had heard a lot of good things about these rifles. My old Mossbergs will consistently shoot under this CZ with peep sights at 50 yards and the CZ wears a 36 power Weaver target scope. In its defense I will say that on a couple occasions and after about 400 rounds it has managed a couple 1/2 inch groups only a couple:(

Have you tried various brands of ammo? Some of my rimfires aren't very picky, but all of them have a preferred brand and lot number. Unfortunately, they don't prefer the same brand and lot...

Any chance that the scope or mounts are faulty or you haven't got the scope optically adjusted (crosshairs sharp & parallax cleared)?

Yep, a lot of the top stuff 20.00 dollars a box , cheap stuff to.

Have three 600 yard rifles that's a no brainer. The scope is brand new Weaver T36 great glass really like the scope, if nothing else I'll use it on another build. Actually on a couple shots I could see the bullet in flight.

Welcome to rimfire.

Yep, what really chaps me is I can take a 1940 model 46MB mossberg with peeps and out shoot this CZ with nice optics. Yeah took a look at rimfire central and looks like the 452 would have been the way to go don't guess the 455 is same quality. Maybe it has something to do with interchangeable barrels

There are two things that I would like to add to my collection and that's a 1903 Anschutz and a double 410 ga. shot gun, wish I had put the money toward one of those now.

if you havent take the CZ apart and make sure the grub screws holding the bbl in are torqued the same,,and mine was action screw torque sensitive,,seems the front is at 20 and the rear is 18,,might look at the crown also,,

you have to give credit though lots of old 22s will outshoot new stuff,,I have a 1957 Brno Model 4 that will shoot with my CZ455 with Lilja bbl,,and the Brno has reciever sights also,,with R50 the Brno will shoot an inch or better at 100 with the sights

I'll give this a try. By the way what did they do then that they aren't doing today I don't get it:confused:

While you are checking the barrel screws you may want to inspect the inlet and verify that there is no major amount of stress in the bedding and that the trigger assembly, & magazine assembly are not contacting the stock. Also if the rifle was not new when you purchased it the barrel could be in need of a good cleaning. But the nice thing about the 455 is the end user can change barrels, so it could be worse...

Are you using wind flags and cleaning? A good custom rifle will shoot like crap without cleaning, and the best shooting rimfire in the country is hard to control at 50yds without flags. They blow further than most people think in a subtle wind changes.

I'll look into these things, this gun is brand new so it has never been bedded but I will make sure nothing touching, the barrel is free floated though, came that way, guess I was expecting to much. The gun shoots great as far as function goes, feeds flawlessly and cycles every thing I've put in it well and that's been a lot of different stuff.

Jbell may have hit the nail on the head with checking the bedding. I have a CZ 455PT in a 17hmr. It wasn't shooting to my expectations for having the manners stock on it. I loosened and tightened the front action screw while holding my finger on the barrel where the end of the forend is. The barrel moved up and down quite a bit that i could even see it. I found the high spot and sanded it out. Now it shoots amazing at 100.

I also just bought a CZ455 and I am using it for BR50 and it is competing with the super high end rifles. I can believe how accurate it is. All I have done with it is put a YO DAVE trigger kit in it. Also Get some WOLF Match EXTRA. Mine loves that stuff. I would post of pic of groups but I don't have any. BTW mine is the Varmint version. Check your stock screws and make sure nothing is bound up.

the way those old rifles were made would cost more than most people would be willing to pay today,,todays state of 22 rifles especially the ones made in the USA is a sad situation,,
I would love to see new Win 52s ,H&R12s ,Mossbergs,Rem 5xx`s etc etc in stores,,Colt and High Standard pistols would be killer as well,,

I would still rather buy one of those rifles from the 50s-80s than anything made in the US today,,

Yeah my son was with me on this last outing sitting at the bench next to me with a Mossberg 144LSB that shot some really small groups in the same conditions, in fact his smallest group would probably measure in the .2's He picked it up at a gun show a couple weeks ago we were at really sharp old rifle. It was a USN government property gun that was on a aircraft carrier even has the carrier number stamped on it.
