Not Dead Yet, Savage Arms Adds .17 WSM to its A Series Rifle Line

I had a ruger 17 wsm and it was nothing but problems. Since WSM ammunition is only made by one company your stuck with whats out there. The thicker rims on the WSM caused big problems with failure to fire or delayed firing by a second or two. Sent it back to ruger twice with a video of the issue and photos of ammunition that had multiple strikes and never fired. ruger says there was no problem. Had the firing pin spring changed, didn't help it. I finally sold it at a big loss. I won't ever buy a wsm unless the ammunition is changed where it will shoot consistently.

I had one of the original sporter barrel b mags when they came out. I tried every ammo I could get. I believe at the time they produced 3 kinds. I could not get the gun to group at all. It just threw them everywhere on the paper. Everything I read was the ammo was trash. I sold it to a friend who wanted to tinker with it. We tried several "remedies." He traded it off for something. I want to love the round. I think it is an awesome cartridge on paper but the experience I and many others had on rimfire central soured me to it.

I like the cartridge itself. I am like others and wish for some better ammo. Glad to see new rifles for the cartridge, maybe that will get some one going. I still don’t see a “new” gun making poor ammo shoot better.

I stood on the sidelines of the 17 WSM show till last spring. I have a Stainless B Mag in 22 Mag that is fantastic so I bought a Stainless Heavy Barrel 17 WSM BMag that was offered for sale on this site. After trying everything but the 15 grain Winchester the 22 Mag will group tighter at 100 than the WSM.

I bought a case of 25 grain Winchester this spring and that turned out to be it's favorite. When I bought the case of 17 WSM it was cheaper than 22 Mag or 17 HMR. If I had known how good it was going to shoot I would have bought two cases! It will hold an inch at 100.

It also liked the Federal 20 grain. I got some ammo with the rifle and the previous owner told me it liked the 20 grain Federal and 25 grain Win. The early lots of 25 grain Win split cases, never causing an issue, but they are sometimes split after firing. The Browning will stay inside a 3" circle at 100 if the wind is calm, if it's all made by Winchester why is it so different? The older Win 25 grain seems to be more frangible than the newer. Could just be me, the older stuff vaporizes on a clay pigeon at a 100 yards.

It currently wears a 4.5-14 Leupold and is getting used as a truck gun / Coyote Rifle. Not unusual to shoot a Coyote over 60# around our place so I am anxious to call in a big yote or catch one crossing the lower pasture.

I hope the ammo keeps getting better and the Savage Autoloader runs smooth. It would be a nice predator rifle if you have to use a rimfire at night and/or you want to save the hides.

ALL, 17 WSM ammo, regardless of what the box says, is made by Winchester. Like any factory ammo, especially the rimfire stuff, it will vary from lot# to lot#.

Someone mentioned sorting by base to ogive length. I've done it but gave up because this stuff is all over the map and I've had it with as much as nearly 30 thou difference in base to ogive length in the same box even. But, for the most part mine will shoot unsorted 20gr ammo straight out of the box good enough to whack sage rats out further than any other rimfire I've ever shot.

We have to remember the 17 WSM is a hunting cartridge and not intended for BR shooting.
