Nosler 70 gr Ballistic Tips

Greetings and my first post. Am in the process of ordering a Savage 12 in 6mm Norma BR and will start ordering supplies for reloading. Rifle has a 1-12 twist and was wondering what you folks thought about eh Nosler 70 gr Ballistic tips for paper punching?

That bullet might be a little long for 12". Although it sounds odd, the 80 grain Berger Match Varmint will be easier to stabilize. It is also a very accurate bullet. If you want to shoot at long range or use heavier bullets, opt for the 8" twist. It will still shoot the lighter bullets reasonably well.

I've been using the 70 Nosler in my 14 twist BR. Works great.

In the rifles I am interested in, either the 4 shot repeater or the single shot with the HS Precision stock the 8" twist is not an option, although if I decide to buy another barrel down the road it will most likely be the 8" twist.

I understand. I have a Savage 12F 6BR with an 8" twist.

I have a Rem 700 with a Lilja 12 twist that shoots 70 and 80 grain Nosler ballistic tips just fine. I use them in 400 & 500 yard competitions. 3360 FPS in my 26" barrel for the 70 grainers and 3127 FPS for the 80s.

cporter: Your data point noted but 400-500 is medium range, 600 and farther is considered long range. I have shot the 95 Sierras at 600+ but the Sierra 107 and Berger 108 perform better. I meant the heavy bullets for long range. Sorry for the ambiguity.

Have any of you folks fired these loads at lower temperatures with good results? I am not questioning anyone, I am just curious.

The only 6mm rifles in which I have recently fired light bullets are my two 9" twist 6mm Remingtons. Years ago I had two .244 Remington rifles with 12" twist, a 722 and a 40-X. I did not have good results in either rifle with anything but light bullets.

I just got a Savage 12 with a 1-12 twist right bolt left port single shot. And I has a box of nosler 80 grain ballistic tip bullets so i loaded some out of curiosity to see if they would stabilize. Thay did and the group was so so. But the rifle really shined with 68 grain berger's. At 100 yards almost a one hole 5 shot group. I was thrilled with this, as I have never had a rifle to do this. And I am not the best shot in the world, but not the worst. Have been shooting ever since 1953 in the service. As said, I also may get other barrels if it is not that hard to change. But I am leaning toward a Savage 6.5-284 now for a LR deer rifle. I am sold on the accuracy of the Savage right out of the box, unbelievable. Lou

Out of my 243Ai 12 twist 15" barrel length and velocity at 3300fps this bullet shoots great up to 500yds, not bad at 750(bullet holes still round) but at 1000yds it is dead - if it hits the target at all the bullets keyhole.

The 70BT will work fine, also try the 70gr Sierria Blitzkings. For paper the best I have used are the 68gr benchrest and 80gr. The 80gr will work great out to 600yds. The 70gr BT and 70BK are best for hunting.
