Norma 130 for 6.5x47 ?

I'm getting ready to build a 6.5x47 Lapua to use in our local tactical matches, from 200 to 1000 yards).

I'm considering using the 130 gr Norma match bullet because it has a higher BC than the Lapua/Sierra 123,0.59 vs. 0.54):

Does anybody have experience shooting the Norma? What do you think?

Robert Whitley reports that the Norma has "a very long bearing surface" and requires an even longer freebore than a Sierra 142 ,details at www.6mmhot.com ). I've heard some people knock the Berger VLDs for having a very short bearing surface. Also, Clinch River touts longer bearing surface as an advantage for their bullets. What do you think?

My goal is to choose the bullet that will give the best long-range performance in this case and then just use that bullet for everything. One load - no fussing around. I'll then choose the reamer, freebore) to match the bullet. Of course, no-turn necks and magazine-friendly OAL,< 2.83") are a given.

Thanks in advance for your advice and opinions. What a great web site!!!

You may want to try the new Berger 130 grainer as well.

I haven't tried the Norma 130. From what I hear some guys like 'em, while others found them hard to tune.

Personally, I'd probably start with a 120 Berger, 123 Lapua, or 123 Sierra, and then move to the 130s.

Quality sucks. Double bullet comparator test they were all over the place.

I would suggest using Bergers.

I've had great luck with the Norma 130's,..... I think the blanket statement that they are crap is probably a touch harsh,....

Probably a more accurate statement might be, they have the same lot to lot variation as say, A Sierra bullet. By and large though, people have been satisfied with these projectiles.

The problem I see with the Norma 130's is that you need a chamber free bore around .175" or more to stay out of the donut area. With a free bore like that, most of the other bullets in the 123-130 gr range will be pretty far up in the neck of the case leaving only about .175" bullet grip. That's not a situation some people like.

Robert,

As I said in my post, I'm not looking for flexibility. Just one good load. I've spent enough time fooling around with load development on other guns...

I'd be willing to throat the gun to fit just this one bullet, *IF* I was convinced it's going to be a good one. So far the jury is still out.,Come on guys! There must be more than two of you that have tried this bullet. How was it?)

I agree with you that bullets in the 139-142 range are better suited to a larger case like the 6.5x284 or 6.5x55 AI.

If I can get an edge with the Norma or Berger 130 in the new 6.5x47 case, then great. Otherwise I'll just make the mainstream choice and use 123s.

Nice talking to you on the phone the other day. Thanks!
