Non-Lead Bullet Hunting

Don't know if you guys have seen this video yet. It's in California and reviews lead and non-lead bullets in hunting.

http://vimeo.com/user7921278/the-non-lead-hunter

It's kinda old news in Cali. They've been been non-lead for a long time. There is show that follows Ca. game wardens and as they stop hunters, they check their ammo to make sure it's non-lead and one g.m. issued a ticket to one guy using lead ammo. I would expect more and more states to follow suit and go non-lead. Which won't bother me, i've been shooting Barnes for years.

I dont care if it doesnt bother you.It bothers me alot. The government has interferred with every aspect of our lives to the point of many people dropping out of hunting where I live due to the cost of our license.California is so way left,I am surprised it hasnt fallen off the map and new york will be next.Think about it.The next thing they will do is limit and then outlaw copper as a waste of a semi precious metal. Then tin will be considered a poison. It will not stop.It is a snow ball rolling down hill.I dont want to pay barnes over inflated prices for their products.I would rather continue with copper and lead.

Remember that copper is posion too..... just look at the drinking water rules and the small amounts of copper we are allowed to have in public drinking water......As soon as all lead is out lawed then they will start on copper....I bet california will be the first with that too....I'm glad that I live 3000 miles away from that place. If you want to use all copper bullets that is fine but if you really think that the majority of the people that want to mandate the use of a more expensive bullet are not trying to devide the shooting world..... Think again.

When I hunt in the condor area, I use copper bullets (Arizona) but only voluntarily. I still shoot prairie dogs with Blitzkings and Vmaxes. Barnes used to have a great bullet that was coated blue. I loved those things on PDs but they quit making them. Condors don't eat PDs so i don't worry too much about that. Besides, the ravens and coyotes clean them up pretty quick and I don't see them dieing of lead poisoning-at least not slow, lingering deaths.

Californica can keep their BS laws and rules- I hope they all stay on that side of the Colorado!!

Pennsylvania has had a ban on lead shot being used over waterways for years. The D.E.P. considers the backstop at your local gun range or club, hazardous materail and any modification to it requires it to be treated as such. Like it or not as states get pressured by the government to push the new "green" laws or lose federal funding and money talks, there's just not enough non-"green" voters to stop it.

There is no evidence that the TWO condors that died from lead poisioning was caused by lead from bullets. This is like lead shot poisioning ducks, BS and lead sinkers being used for fishing. Hunters have not been dying from lead poisoning from their meat.

Spot on Jon, I agree 100%

I watched the whole video. I'm sure Mr. Prieto is a great guy. The video was a full-on propaganda piece, with more half truths and innuendo then Carter had pills. I'm sorry this hunter has been used in this fashion. It would take me at least as long as the video was to counter the whole presentation.

If Mr. Prieto eats a great quantity of wild pig meat. He might want to get his kids checked for their pesticide concentration levels. Wild animals tend to have a much high level of pesticides within there systems then do store bought meat. Livestock for human consumption are highly regulated and tested for organic/non-organic poisons, pharmaceuticals, bacteria, virus, parasite, heavy metals and a whole bunch of other unpronounceable stuff. Wild meat may taste better then a steak from a Ralphs supermarket, but it's NOT a safer animal product. Sorry Mr. Prieto.

I've been using copper alloy bullets since A-Square introduce the monolithic solid in 1978. I think the X-bullet came along in the early 80's. Steel Shot has been around since the 80's. I've used all of them. I will only use Barnes bullets to hunt. That's my own personal chose. I don't need the government or their stooges in the medical field telling me what to do or use. I use what works best. If I'm going to spend $1,000.00, $5,000.00 or more on a hunt, I'm not going to let a bullet at 50 cents to a dollar bullet stop me.

Again I I don't need the government to tell me what to use!

Glo,
We finally agree on something :)

Well when they do get around to passing a ban on all bullets using lead I guess I'll just have to be one of those folks who roll the dice and continue to shoot what I have stock piled. If I were to shoot somewhere between 1000 rounds of year of all three .204, .224 & .243 bullets for the next 13 years I still wouldn't be completely out of Vmax, Amax & NBT varmint bullets. And that doesn't even start to take into consideration the various target bullets and hunting bullets.

RJ

So all those anti-gun, anti-hunting, tree hugging green efficiency far left nut jobs and politicians can just pucker up and kiss the lower potion on my southern **s. As I'm keeping my lead bullets, who knows before they put my stinking ole red neck butt in the ground I may need them to make one last stand at the Red River. If it comes down to that I sure hope all my Yankee shooting friends will come on down and join the party.

RJ,
I got to give you credit, you have guts enough to say what I was a thinking :D

It would be nice if the idiots of CA would stay there but they turned it into a hole and they are spreading their poison to every state they move to.

If lead was truly as bad as they say it was none of us would be here because all of our grandparents would be dead from lead. I for one will shoot the best bullet my rifle shoots. I will carry all copper bullets if I am required to but I will shoot copper and lead if my rifle shoots them better.

It is too late for CA but not for else where. We need to fight this crap where ever we can.

Make no mistake, the people who make these laws are trying to take your guns and doing it one bullet at a time. This is just another approach in doing just that. Do not agree to any laws prohibiting any kind of bullet. All of this green planet stuff is for control and dominance.

I live by choice in California as that is where my family has lived since 1842. I do not like most of the laws we have, but what really bothers me is that so many people think we don't fight for our rights. I look for rifles to buy on several sites on-line and it really gripes me that some refuse to sell to us. Isn't that what the politicians really want, to make it hard for us to buy a rifle just because somebody doesn't want to take a few minutes to have his ffl checked out? It is the stupidest law on the books, but it is working as I bet 15% of sellers won't ship here. The study on condors and lead poisoning is also a one sided hoax. I quit watching 60 Minutes years ago because they only show their side of the story. The fact of the matter is, the western states will probably all require non-lead within 10 years. That might not be right, but I believe it will happen. Tom in Kalifornia

Tom,
I understand your frustrations and feel sorry for you and other good people of California, speaking only for myself I don't hate Californians but we get a lot of Californians moving up north of you here in Washington state, When you meet them at the gas station, post office or at the local school and introduce yourself to them you find out most of the time they have moved up here to get out of the rat race and want a quieter, peaceful life, a few months later there on the PTA, city council, school board and any and every other seat they can get on, the next thing we know were putting in new sidewalks, building new up to code schools, changing laws that we don't need, taxes on top of taxes, new swimming pools, leash laws, noise laws, etc.etc.etc. so around here, ie Washington, Oregon, and Idaho or at least where the three come together we are primarily Farmers, Ranchers, and Sawmill people, Simple hard working, right wing conservative people that just want to be left alone, we don't need nor want big city rules, so when you say Californian up here it's like saying Sh#* in Church, don't set to well. As I stated from the start we or rather I don't hate Californians, I just hate there left wing ways,...Heck the finest mortal man I ever knew came from California,....(Ronald Wilson Reagan) Your laws are so screwed up it makes it difficult to ship anything gun related there, and even if it is legal it's a PITA, so don't take it personal it's just the way it is, Oh by the way that's neat you have that much history and heritage there, in 1842 it was a wonderful place, it was where dreams were made into reality, and that's why people flocked in by the droves after 1848 and ultimately is what ruined THE state and the whole western seaboard,....Too many PEOPLE!!

Bozo699, I was not aware that you and I differed on so many things. It must be because I live in Los Angeles proper; California.

Rjin Texas, I am 52 and ready to join you. I have been stomping around the field since my dad took me Quail hunting on October 30th 1965 up at Lake Isabella CA, just east of Bakersfield. From 10ft to 1760 yards they had better bring some M1 Abrams tanks. Better yet, they had better paint me with a LASAR 'cause I'm a real small target at 5'-7” tall.

Disclaimer, disclaimer!!! I'm just venting. NOTE: NSA please stand down :o .

As a Californian I do not recognize my state. As implied above my father was a hunter. He was also one of a thousand core engineers that put a man on the moon. He and my mom were died-in -the-wool Democrats. They loved Roosevelt and Kennedy. They hated with vitriol, Ronald Reagan. But I can guarantee this, they would not support the currant crop of political hacks in Sacramento.

Unfortunately the population along the coast sets the agenda for the rest of the state. I support Supervisor Jeff Stone in splitting California in two. Both my wife and my self will take our $100,000.00 a year, plus income out of the old state to the new state.

Lead does kill birds, where as the same ingested by mammals will leave them unharmed for the most part.
Lead gets caught in the gizzard, and sits there like the gravel they ingest on purpose. It's how a bird grinds it's food to digest. The lead be-it from shot or bullet fragments break down slowly and enter the blood stream more effectively, moving directly to the nervous system, they lose muscle control 1st then organs shut down, they die.
Mammals just pass it out in a turd. The gut doesn't have enough time to break it down into toxic volumes.

I don't like the Laws any more than any other true sportsman, considering we as a whole contribute more in time and money towards conservation than many groups combined.
But I can't sit still when folks still think lead poisoned birds is a myth or conspiracy.

Are Canadians welcome? The lefties up here forced gun clubs in my city to close as a remedy to gang violence. Last month a ban was proposed on any type of ball in playgrounds in answer to someone being hit in the head with a soccer ball. City officials who think all handguns should be banned...even from our police?!!! ??? Maybe some of this nonsense is leaking through the 49th parallel?

swt5,
The President of the United States HATES the Canadians for some reason but I feel your brothers divided by a imaginary line, we need each other and as far as I am concerned your thoughts are as welcome as anyone else. Sounds like your laws are as screwed up as ares and worse.
The 49th parallel comment,....priceless :D take care my Canadian Brother.
