No turn necks

I have recently noticed that shooters(long range) have been going to no turn reamers. When it is stated that a no turn neck is being used is it in fact that the shooter removes the brass(lapua) from the box and loads it and shoots it. Or are they taking a skim cut so all pieces are equal in thickness?

For me, "no- turn" means no-turn. That's what I did with my 6BR Lapua with .272" chamber neck diameters and also 2, 6ppc barrels with .272" necks, using Lapua 220 Russian.

I've compared no-turn versus turned, ( in some more than just a light cleanup cut), and can't claim any difference in group sizes. Might be there, I just haven't seen it.

Sure is a lot less work though.

I don't know anyone that is winning at long range that doesn't turn necks, but there maybe. At long range neck tension is very important,no turn doesn't give you that. Short range bench rest they turn and long range bench rest they turn, X corse i doubt it....... jim

The term "no-turn neck" chambering can be used fairly loosely. The term "no turn" SHOULD mean you do not have to do ANYTHING to the brass to safely chamber and fire it. To do so, and anticipate that the neck opening is sufficient to accomodate whatever brand of brass someone might put into it - it will (by need) be a little on the loose side. Turning down the necks a bit can be done to improve uniformity in tension but you will be a little looser yet. The turn necks work better for me, though the best 600 yard group I ever fired was with a 6BR .272" no turn. Best to discuss with your gunsmith what you plan to use for optimum reamer selection in case your choices are a little off the norm. Buying a used rifle is no problem - just do a chamber casting with Cerrosafe (cost under $10.00?) at Sinclair International. Follow the accompanying directions and compare the casting neck with your loaded round. Your measured comparison should show some nice clearance between the two.
