no answers yet on the 260rem

I still havent received any answers regarding the effectivness of the 260 on large game i.e. elk and moose.Any feed back would be apreciated.

"I agree. This year I shot a real nice whitetail @ 576 yards with a .260 Rem., 140 Gr. Berger out of a Surgeon Action. I hit the deer within 1 1/2" of point of aim, dialed in, x number of clicks). I had studied the deer, ranged him, etc. I was 99% confident of a killing first shot. The deer walked..did not run about 35 yards. I actually thought I had missed..but I did not know how or why I missed...when the deer fell over and stuck all 4 feet up in the air. I was just about to squeeze off another shot when he did this. Point is...he never got excited or even ran after being punched through the front shoulders with a exit wound about the size of a silver dollar. I did an elk about the same way a week later at 672 yards..only he dropped in his tracks with the same .260 Rem. but with a 130 gr. Barnes Triple Shock bullet."

That's quoted from a discussion on Long-Range hunting over on http://www.westcoasttactical.com

Thought I remembered someone having great success with the little .260 on big game.

I've little personal experience with the .260 on game. Neat cartridge though...

The ballistic near-twin to the .260 is the 6.5x55 Swedish Mauser round. Using bullets as heavy as 160 grains, this round has used to hunt elk, what we call a moose - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moose ) and even elephant.

The .260 is a great deer cartaridge, but if i was going after the larger game such as elk and moose i think that i would go with a larger cartaridge such as a .280 or a magnum caliber . The rem short action mags are great either the 7 or 300 . But that is just my opinion, and you know what they say about opinions .

I just got my .260 put together this fall and I've only taken one animal with it--a Central Barren Grounds Caribou, so I don't have any experience with it for larger game. However, I think I'd prefer to have a 7mm or larger as Shooter32 suggested. Even a .223 could bring down either animal with a well-placed shot, but I'd feel better having a rifle that wouldn't maim an animal with a not-so-well-placed shot. You really want to have something that can penetrate a shoulder if you're unlucky enough to hit it.

as ASA said ballistic twin of the 6.5x55.
I use the 6.5x55 for all my huntiong other than rabbits and it works sweeet.

Place it right and it will work for you to.
I like the 120 core lokts but many people have found the 129 standard hornady and the SST's work very well also.

The relatively long bullet and corresponding high Ballistic coefficient of the 6.5's give great penetration. Nosler offers their partition in 100, 120, and 140gr weights. These are great penetrators even with the 2600 fps that the heavy bullets limit you too. In my opinion way too many people go into the woods with large caliber magnum guns that they don't shoot well. This is completely unnecessary with the great bullets being offered for the mid-calibers,25-28). Ask any guide anywhere when a client shows up with one of the magnum bang sticks and he will tell you that until that client demonstrates his proficiency with same, they worry.

Remember the 260 is basically a .243 necked up to use a larger bullet or another way to look at is as a 308 necked down. How many people use a 243 on large game ?? For the sake of argument hunting use on elk and moose will work if you get under 250 yards, use quality bonded bullets and have some reason not to use at least a 30:06 or 300 WIN Mag. If you do your part on aiming then the 260 will kill large game. However you have to ask yourself why you have chosen to limit youself in terms of power and penetration.
