Nitriding a Panda Bolt?

Anyone have recommendations for a company to Nitride a couple of Panda bolts? Secondly, anyone done this and have a few pictures they can share (ideally a high polish action with a nitrided bolt).

I find myself shooting in fairly humid conditions most of the time, and it's a constant battle to keep that porous bolt from developing rust in the flutes. And yes....I'm meticulous on maintenance....I've tried every chemical....it'll start developing surface rust by the end of the match.

Kelbly uses H&M Metal Processing. I believe I would ask Kelbly about their experience nitriding bolts whose bolt handles were not tig welded to the bolt body. I believe they had some non-tig welded bolt handles come loose and had some theories as to why that was occurring.

This is not the answer you asked for, but there are a number of commercial aerosol products that will protect carbon steel I horrible conditions. Even if not your final solution, maybe a stopgap measure.

If Kelbly would just cut U shaped straight flutes in the bolts they would be a lot easier to clean and maintain than the sort of V shaped spiral ones.

Mike, I and another friend/F-open shooter ( @Louisb )have used Houston Plating and coating for Die/die parts/bolt etc. They charge $150 minimum but IIRC that covered a couple of dies and bolts. They did a great job and a one week turnaround.

the flutes are spiral so that they will not wear groves in the action and it doesnt wobble in the ways and click on ctg in the magazine of a repeater,,,,

I can attest to this exact point. My Panda handle was silver soldered, went through Nitriding and came off recently. Kelbly’s will make it right though, best customer service in the industry. The coating they use/recommend looks great and works even better - do another in a heartbeat. You’ll love it.

I have used APW to hard chrome plate several Remington bolts. A Panda may be fit too tight for any coating.

Yes, it is better to Melonite.

Just a thought, but you could coat the flutes with Cerakote and polish the bolt body. I have done literally hundreds of Remington's this way.
