NitreBlue bluing salts

has anyone used the blueing salts from brownells? i got a
10 lbs. bucket of the suff and havent used it yet. its beenm sitting for about 2 years now, and i want to bust it out and give it a whurl. i was going to use it to get a "fire blue" or so they call it on an action. i just wanted to know if onyone else has done it to see if they had any recomendations or short cuts to make it look good. i dont know how its going to turn out, but figured i'd try it.

oh, buy the way, do i really need the steel container and burner set up from brownells thats like, $400.00, or will a grill burner and a stainless steel pot work just the same? thanks brian

Using Stainless Steel tanks with Brownells Bluing salts will give you more headaches than you can probably deal with.
Also remember that preparing the metal is more important than the bluing solution
will ever be.
A hand polish will give better results than a powered buffer will give too.
No real short cuts to the bluing process, just tons of paying attention to details like holding to EXACT temperatures in all nooks and cranny's of the solution while constantly stirring the pot so to speak.
You'll need to add water to the solution quite often very carefully to keep the temps correct for the steel your bluing.
That Oxnate stuff will eat holes in your hide so be cautious and wear protection while working with it..........
