I Searched the forum with little success so I will ask. I been looking at the NF shv 5-20x56mm for my 6br varmint rifle, just wanting your guys thoughts that have used them and how they compare to a nsx 5.5-22x56mm.

Good? Bad? Just be honest!

Thanks Travis

Cant speak to that specific SHV, but did have the 4.5-14 F1. It tracked perfectly and returned to zero reliably. The clicks were extremely tactile. I liked it. Good scope.

I have the SHV 5-20 on my Remington 20 Vartarg and would buy it again. My Cooper 20 VT rifle has the Vortex Viper 6-24 FFP.

Due to my vision, the SHV works much better for me than the Vortex. Being 2nd plane, the reticle is always the same size. I usually start off with the SHV set on the dot between 9 and 12 power when I'm scanning a field for sage rats. I can make a quick calculation in my head with the reticle and make the shot. I can always see the full reticle in the SHV where with the Vortex I can not due to it being FFP.

When I'm shooting, I battle a double astigmatism and eye floaters so the better glass, 2nd focal plane, MOAR reticle in the SHV works much better for me than the Vortex. The Vortex is a great scope, it just doesn't work out for me. I'll probably sell the Vortex and get another SHV.

What are ya planning on using for a target, live Varmints or targets ? 20x isn’t a lot these days

I had a NF shv for a very short period of time therefore I won’t speak to the durability etc. I would at least look through perhaps a 8-32 x 56 ( mine is Sightron) I can see 30 cal bullet holes in white paper at 500 yards , I can’t do that with a 20x , maybe one of the fellas has one you can check out

I have two, the 5-20 with a lit MOAR and the 4-14 non lit with MOAR. They track perfectly and hold zero well {for a while I had it on a 280AI mountain rifle}. I like to hunt until I cant see and although I thought I knew better than to expect too much out of the glass I found that if you take the time to adjust everything to optimum in low light, it will surprise you. I never cared much for NightForce scopes, always saw a lot of them for sale. Also had a guy that did nothing but brag them up like it was the only scope worthy of existence, but I am glad I took a chance on one. I bought the 5-20 and the other was a gift...but if I need another good scope I would have bought it.
