Nightforce SHV thoughts and opinions please!

Just like the title says I would like your thoughts and opinions on the Nightforce SHV. I just bought a Masterpiece Arms 6.5 Creedmoor and I'm looking for glass to put on it. I had a Nightforce ATACR and love it but I don' want to spend that much money this time around. Will I be disappointed?

From a glass perspective, yes. I love the glass in my ATACR 5-25. My SHV2-10 (I think, or is it 3-10?) doesn't compare. I have MOAR reticles in both, which is nice. My SHV is on a hunting 6.5x47. For the ranges that I would hunt with it (500yds max on a white tail), it's perfectly functional. Hold over and shoot, just make sure you're on 10x (mine is SFP).

You will appreciate the weight difference if you plan on walking around with it. That ATACR is HEAVY!!!

Thanks AlloyTargets! This is exactly the kind of feedback I'm looking for.

I have shv 5-20 on my hunting rifle , the glass is much better than vortex pst, it's a bit heavier than the pst but not much. Zero set (not zero stop) works well.

I have three 5-20 SHV scopes I use for long sessions of ground squirrel shooting. Looking through the scope nearly continually for hours on end tells a story about clarity, resolution, contrast, ergonomics, dealing with various lighting conditions and how your eyes feel at the end of the day. The SHV gets the job done very well for a reasonable cost.

What is the difference between the zero set and their zero stops? I have tried to find it on their website with no luck.

The zerostop on the more expensive Nightforce scopes uses a clutch mechanism which is more precise then the zeroset on the shv.

With the shv when rotating the turret back down to zero if you turn the knob too forcefully at the bottom you can actually move past zero a half to one full click. You quickly learn not to over torque it. I dial the turrets constantly as I do not like holding over and I find the zeroset system works just fine. Approximately once a year I take all my scopes and test their tracking by dialing 30 Moa at exactly 100 yards (measured with a tape) against a test board to make sure the elevation turrets are tracking accurately. All three of my shv 5 to 20 have been spot-on the three times I've tested them. I can't say the same for some other scopes I own.

If I may weigh in gents'
I have owned over the years, Leupold, Bushnell, Weaver, Nightforce SHV, SWFA and Sightron and by far the most disappointing scope for the money was the over priced over hyped Nightforce SHV. I paid nearly $1300.00 and when compared to a simple 10x SWFA it was not any more clear .I took it back! IMO for tactical work SWFA will out track them all 100 percent. For long range bulleye Sightron has the best resolution in fact I can see 308 bullet holes at 600 yards!

South Prarie Jim,

You must have got a bad one. I have a Sightron SIII 8-32 which is an awesome scope for the $ but the glass quality, color contrast and ergonomics on my 3 SHV's are better IMHO. Furthermore the NF has a better reticle and the eye relief is more forgiving with the NF.

I am not the only one who appreciates the glass quality of the 5-20 SHV. There are many very positive reviews, with numerous folks rating the glass on par with the NXS. BTW, I used to own a NXS but sold it because the reticle was too fine for varmint shooting in poor light conditions. I did not see any difference in the glass quality between NXS and SHV.

Phil I respect your opinion for sure, my SHV was very nice that's why I bought it however when compared to the SWFA I didn't feel it was a $1000 better and made the choice to keep looking which lead to 3x15 swfa that has great reticle more elevation tracks perfect, better finish , almost indestructible with a lifetime warranty it has yet to fail at all for half the price. Now the Sightron IMO doesn't track as well but the eye relief is good and when I can see bullet holes at 600 yards for $700 I like it .
Much respect

I like the 5-20 SHV and would not hesitate to buy another. I believe the optic should fit the application. I have leupolds that do exactly what I bought them for, as well as a couple Vortexes.

Good luck

Well I bit the bullet and bought a SHV. I also just ordered a VX5 HD for my hunting rifle so I can give you guys a comparison shortly.

I have a gun identical to yours except in grey . I love it . I put a Vortex gen1 razor 5-20x50 on it . You'll really enjoy it . I've become a fan of Spencer barrels snd Curtis actions since the purchase . Mpa builds them like a brick house .

That's awesome! I'm glad you are enjoying yours. I haven't had a chance to shoot mine yet. Living in Indiana the weather hasn't been the best lately. What kind of 100 yard groups are you getting?
