Nightforce NXS magnification preference?

I have used scopes in both of those power ranges and shoot long range with both. It really comes down to what you want to do with it. If you are only punching paper at 1000 then 42X may be in order. I really like the 5.5-22X. It gives good power and when you use it for hunting 5.5 is still low enough that it does not prevent close range shots. I have had issues with high humidity and not being able to see the target at all with higher powers. On a few occasions I was unable to use a setting more than 10X

I have noticed in the NXS models that the popularity trends towards the lower power 3.5-15 and the 5.5-22. Opinions please?

I am not sure that is an accurate statement. It would depend on who you are talking to. If you are talking about the folks that compete than both of those are a poor choice when compared against the higher powered scopes.

While I shoot Long Range events, even the Point Blank Benchrest guys shooting at 100 and 200 yds want as much power as they can get. For years the lowest power scope seen mostly was 36 power, today they are trying to get as close to 45 power as they can.

In competition you want and sometimes need as much power as you can get. Notice that the March 60 power scope is very popular in competition. Nightforce just introduced there first 15-55 power scope so they know something. It is always better to have more power and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Thank you for the replies. I also adhere to the aim small miss small mentality. It seems to me that most folks who buy an NSX model would probably be buying it for a more utilitarian use, because it is supposedly more rugged.
I have a BR model in the 12-42 magnification for target and was thinking about a NSX for a ground hog/varmint type of rifle in 6.5 x 47. I was considering the 8-32, and am hoping its a good choice. Thanks again Laurence.

That is fine on a bench, rest or bipod, not so much for sling. If you get the scope up too high in power, all that moving around will drive you battie!

I usually have the scope set arounnd 16X
