I like fine cross hairs for benchrest.
The dot ones get lost on x's on short range, imo.

If you still have not bought a scope yet, get a Kahles 10-50 with the MOAK reticle. It is a floating dot that is (I believe) .090. It is so tiny that at 1000 yards on an F-Class target, I can place the dot ON any number and with the dot still on the number I can read the number! It does not get better than that!

I have 3 DDR2's for long range and gound hog hunting. Like the dot i think it is easier to keep centered on your target because you can see all around it.

where does fine reticle versus thicker reticles come in handy? a problem?

For some, the width of the reticle stadia and/or diameter of the aiming dot can be an issue if it's too small to see. Much of that has to do with the target background color. A black background such as found in F-Class targets can make a very fine line/dot difficult to see, especially on cloudy days. A lighter background provides much better contrast for visualizing fine reticles.

The drawback to much heavier/thicker reticles is that they obscure more area on the target, which makes it harder to hold a very fine POA consistently. You want a reticle that is heavy enough to easily visualize against the target background, but not so heavy as to limit how fine you can hold. That will solely be decided by a given individual's eyes.

I have had both, no longer own either. I consider them equivalent in image quality (fantastic), while very different in purpose.

Thanks! I was comparing Nightforce glass side by side today, and ATACR glass blows the benchrest and nxs scopes out of the water. Made me wonder about the NF Competition. I never bought one because of the POI shift some scopes had a few years back.
