Nightforce 12-42

I was under the impression that if you were a NF dealer, the company dictated the minimum selling price. I have seen some offer free shipping or add gratuity items, but I think the bottom end price will be the same everywhere.

Lester also gives a 5-10 % discount some times. Call around, the prices do vary from time to time....

If Nightforce is like many companies they have a MAP. you cannot advertise an item for less but you can sell it for whatever you want.

Can someone shed some light on why Nightforce lists the exit pupil of the 8-32x56 benchrest scope at less than 7mm when on 8 power.

They show it at 7 even when I checked. Exit pupil is objective diameter divided by magnification.

BTW, looks like they've completely redone their website. Vastly improved.

Hmm, I must'a clicked on the NSX model.

I would've said it must be a typo but 4mm at 12x for the 12-42x is off also. Now I'm curious.

I got curious enough to call NF since I'm in the market for a scope at the moment.

Apparently, they use a doublet lens in the BR model that reduces the exit pupil diameter.

Ok, in reading all I can find about doublet lenses I can't see why that would reduce the exit pupil. I am not saying it doesn't, just that I don't understand why. For the record, I also called Nightforce and got some off the wall answer followed up with "if you don't think that sounds good you should actually go measure the exit pupil of some other optics."

Yeah, the guy I got wasn't very knowledgeable either, but he did his best to help. He did get a little edgy when I mentioned March scopes, however.

This is just a complete guess, but if you look at the examples of light transmission through the doublet lenses, you wind up with an effective decrease of the objective diameter. Like I said, however, that's a complete guess.

mayor, I had to use some shim for my 30mm Leupold. for my 308 at 1000yds. You probably be OK with the 300wm but will be towards the bottom of the range. Some people think that is not good due to not being in the best part of the glass and torque on the adjustment. If you need to raise the rear mount will depend on speed and bullet, trajectory). You can buy a ballistic program for about $30 to $60. I got mine on ebay for $35 with no manual, however it is very simple to use. I put .030 under mine till I bought the adjustable plastic sleeved rings that work great and don't leave ring marks. I can't for the life of me remember who makes them right now but someone here will know as they are quite popular. I don't think it matters what power scope you have. Hope this helps if you still need it. Jim

Hey, I think I have about four months to come up with one of these over powered scopes,so which one ? The 12-42 benchrest,or NXS??? Whats the difference?

Hey Man, It'll be a matter of your choice. Take your time and decide which one you like the best. I own,2) 12 -4 2 NXS with DD reticle and,1) 3.5 - 15 NXS with the tactical mil. reticle. I love all of them. BTW, I would not trade either one for the BR models. Just my preference and opinion. Bill

The big difference between the NXS and the BR model is 1/4 min clicks for the NXS verses 1/8 min clicks for the BR.
The NXS has more elevation clicks if you plan on going beyond 1000 yards. The NXS has side parallax adjustment verses the BR's on the objective bell. If your left handed the side focus is of no benefit, and may just be a deterrent. The NXS has nicer target knobs with no caps to constantly take off. Finally, big price difference between the two.

To me the BR is clearer, one less mirror due to the NXS's side focus. I own both, but shooting score targets out to 600 yards the BR is a lot easier with those 1/8 min clicks. Using the NXS I usually have to modify my aiming point, hold off) to put the bullet where I want it. Not the easiest to do with an 1 1/4 inch ten ring out to 500 meters.
For hunting, or a tactical rig I'd choose the NXS.
It all depends on your intended usage.
