Nightforce 12-42

No doubt about it. If you do have doubts anyway, purchase a 20 MOA base and you will be good past 1000 yds. Bill

Way too much power. You will get too much mirage to be able to see clearly. The 42 is great for bench work but once the barrel gets hot or on a hot day its useless. Only 45 moa compared to 100 on the 5-22x50. I find on most days I wont go past 24 or so.

It sure is nice having the extra power on hand when needed.
it's a rare morning when I go lower than 24X on any of my 12x42's.

Bulloney. Everyone that knows what they are doing uses a mirage shield so barrel heat has little to do with image. I wish my 32X went higher at times. Depends on the weather as to how high you go.

The conversation about scopes and powers just came up Wednesday night while I was talking to some of the guys that shoot 600 and 1000 yard at Williamsport.
The nightforce, whether it be 8-32 and 12-42 benchrest models are the most desired for 600 and 1000 yards shooting.
Your preference in reticles, whether it be a dot or crosshair.
You will need 20 MOA base.

I forgot to mention I have a 5-22x50,8-32x56 both NSX and a 12-42x56BR. I shoot F Class and long range varmint. On a hot day the 42 is useless. I also have a 6-24x56 Zeiss that is a great scope for 1000yds. I dont see the need to the high power. It can be useful but it has limits.

Well obviously you haven't figured out what that dial on the eyepiece end of the scope is for.

One thing that has helped me immensely when purchasing scopes is to not try and anticipate how much power I need on the top end, but how little power I need on the low end. I've never felt like I bought a scope with too much power.

The 12-42s hold their prices a little better than the other NF choices for a reason--they're in higher demand. Besides, mirage is the same at low magnification as it is at higher powers, you just see less of it at lower powers.

FWIW,

My 1000yd BR guns used to have 8X32 Nightforce BR scopes.

They now wear 12X42's

Gentlemen,
In addition to the great information here, what height scope rings are needed with a 20MOA base to accommodate a 12-42 with a 69MM objective bell? And which rings are the best if you plan to use that scope on two different rifles? Thank you
Shoot Strait teele1

teele1, That 69 mm objective must be new????? My 12 - 42 s have 56 mm objectives. The rings will depend on what rifle and what base you are going to use as to whether it will all work or not.
One of my 12 - 42 s is on a Savage 12 LRPV with the extra heavy barrel and I have it mounted in Ken Ferrell's 20 MOA base and tall rings. I hope this helps. Bill

billmo thanks I know the objective is 56MM but the bell diameter is 69MM. It will mount on a Savage heavy barrel with a Farrell 20MOA base. So HIGH Leupold QRW or Mark 4 would work? Thanks.

Yea, I think it would with no problem. But I would ask the salesperson that you buy from and get their opinion too. Bill

I apologize to the starting poster but where do you suggest I purchase my 12-42 Nightforce Benchrest from? Thank you teele1

Call Bruce Baer, he's listed under gunsmiths on the main page. He stocks all Nightforces and will treat you right.
Tell him Danny Reever sent you.

As to rings and mounts I use the high Badgers on a Badger 20 MOA base on one gun and Kelbleys on Davidson bases on the other.
Both work well, but the Badgers are definately the heavy duty setup.

Danny

Brunos has the best price on the NF scopes.
He will beat anyone that advertises a lower price on the NF.
