Night time groundhog?

Three times I've seen chucks after dark. All three times was while coon hunting. One was treed in a small mulberry tree, once on a fence post, and once caught on the ground in a hay field. WD

The Golf is one of those KMart versions, no options, dirty, rusty, smokes, tires wobble but I drive it like a Porsche! Needs 100 more HP and another gear!

It is not one of mine. The only VW I've owned was about a 1960 Beetle. Besides, if it had been mine, it wouldn't be rusted out. We don't salt the roads down here.

I'm not familiar with groundhogs, but as far as rodents working at night goes, I have a couple of examples.
We had beavers where we hunted years ago. They were always building dams on a creek we had to cross to leave he camp. We would tear out the dam and get the water level down in the afternoon, and by daylight they would have the dam repaired and the water level back to where THEY want it.

I have squirrels in the neighborhood and have done some rehab on young ones that have been made homeless by storms and trees being cut down. It is very common for squirrels to build their nests at night. They usually work at night during a full moon. The driveway would be clear of limb cuttings at dark then full of cuttings in the morning.
When it came time to turn the young ones out, would open the patio and cage doors and let them go. Most would explore and come back at dark to sleep in their own bed. Some would get turned around and not find their way back until several hours after dark. They all pretty much leave after a couple of weeks.
I have one squirrel that has been living on her own, in a tree in my yard for 11 years now. She is one I raised and turned loose.

You know, there might be something to this...it seems like around here at least every time they test a woodchuck it ends up having rabies. More so than raccoons or skunks and foxes. I think our DNR said it's because being a "hole in the ground" living animal they often have visitors {other animals} that stay the night in the den with them and rabies infects more of them due to the proximity of the other carriers.

I have seen them out in the snow...here is a trail camera picture. If I remember right it was in the high 30's when this was taken.

KMart...sorry to imply ownership! I just can't afford the GTI, the Rolfsburg or whatever HIPO versions. Mine is just a commuter car.
