Nice little Ruger No 1 modification

Adam in WI

Practically lives here
Ruger No 1 users know that the safety tab overhangs into the cartridge channel behind the breech block (some say intentionally). This causes cases to often times hit the safety and either stay put, or (what usually happens to me) bounce back into the chamber. I'm told that cranking up the ejector spring can overcome this, but while looking into the issue I found this little part from Legendary Action Works. This is a replacement safety that has a rounded profile at the front. I think it looks nice, and in my opinion a little more classy than the original. Installation took about 20 minutes...

That's a nice modification! Looks great. Over the years I wondered why Ruger did what they did. At one point I thought of trimming off the forward part of the safety, but decided against it. I figured then the fired case could come right back at my face, or worse, my eyeball. I ended up removing the ejector springs in my No. 1's which left me with an extractor instead of an ejector. If I really wanted or needed an ejector, your solution seems to be essential. I'd just need to learn to keep my face out of the way.

For a bench gun or a varminter, I would certainly leave the original. But for a dedicated hunter and definitely a dangerous game rifle, this seems like a good addition. I remember clearly two years ago after I put a shot on a large buck after the first shot I lowered the lever and fumbled with the empty case trying to reload. It wasn't needed, but it stuck in my memory.

Looks nice.
I use to use a 220 swift number 1 a lot to shoot coyotes and was very fast at shooting it. It lived in the pickup 365 days a year on the ranch. I never had one stay in during hunting. On the bench or prone yes. The trick is to slightly tilt the gun as you open the action. They fly out every time, throw in another and shoot again. Usually done faster than my hunting partners could shoot their bolt action. That was the good old days.
Tried this the last couple years, definitely out of practice, but still my favorite rifle to hunt with.
