NF ZeroStop - Lesson Learned

Wanting as much elevation as possible without getting an Ivey scope base, and not having a NF ZeroStop scope before, I got a Spuhr mount with 44 MOA tilt. Before install the scope had 131 MOA total vertical adjust, even though the specs only claim 120 MOA. After install and setting the ZeroStop, 131 MOA up adjust, a very welcomed surprise. From the owner’s manual - “The ZeroStop elevation adjustment allows for the full use of the elevation travel above your established zero for longer target engagement distances, ...”. So that’s what it means. LIB! I think this also means a tilted rail or scope base are not helpful with a ZeroStop scope, but I wanted the Spuhr uni-mount anyway and Spuhr doesn’t charge extra to tilt it. I’ve got 151 MOA up elevation to work with including holdover. That will have to do for now. :) I’m still learning why people love their NF ZeroStop scopes so much. I feel a little dumb but sometimes you get lucky and there’s no harm done.

Not sure what you thought zero stop was/is. I have thirteen NF scopes with zero stop and all do exactly what the ZS is supposed to do and do it using canted bases. ZERO the scope at a specified distance (I use 100 yards) and set the ZS so the turret doesn't go any farther down than that (I usually allow it to go 1 mil 0r a couple MOA lower) and set the turret cap to the zero mark. now you can dial every bit of your elevation into the scope, without remembering how many rotations you did, and then back down until it stops. That means you have hit your exact 100 yard zero with no wondering if you didn't go far enough or went to far. Nothing worse than getting a full rotation or so off when you're dialing up or down on the clock.

The only erector system that I know of that does what the OP thinks the NF did in this case is the US Optics EREK system

I knew it set a stop, but I didn’t know you got the total range on the top side of your stop. Yes it works with canted bases, but I would still have the same 131 MOA even with a 0 MOA base. I just would have had to adjust the upper clutch plate further before it contacted the lower clutch plate, in my understanding. All in all, it’s pretty awesome.

yours would be the first Nightforce NXS I have ever seen do this. There is no way you've added internal adjustment. Any chance you're running a BEAST?

I would lock the rifle down and make sure the reticle is actually moving.

It’s an ATACR.

something doesn't sound right. I would put the rifle in a rest and dial up all the way through it's elevation range and make sure it doesn't just stop moving while the turret is still turning.

I'm with @FatBoy on this one. Most NF scopes come out of the box close to optical center. I am guessing you dialed all the way down and then went from there as far up as it would travel? There is virtually no way you will have the exact same amount of travel after the scope is mounted as you did just exercising the turrets. I just don't think we are getting the true picture thru your explanation. Sorry.

As you said “now you can dial every bit of your elevation into the scope, without remembering how many rotations you did, and then back down until it stops. That means you have hit your exact 100 yard zero with no wondering if you didn't go far enough or went to far.” Your words. That’s exactly what I can do. There’s no problem for you and Fatboy to fix.

There isn't a problem with the scope sir. Good luck!

Talked to Nightforce, y'all are right, the adjust isn't doing what I thought. Tech told me it will probably do a little better than 131 though, and told me how to do it. There's nothing wrong with the scope, but the user is occasionally defective. Thanks for the help.

You'll still have A TON of elevation with a 44 moa Spur. I run a 40 MOA Nightforce base with a 22x NXS and I'm 18 MOA off the bottom. Leaves me about 82 MOA up. That takes the 300wm way on out there.

Awesome setup you have these.

As another point of reference for the OP:

I have an ATCAR with the zero stop on a .338. With 20 MOA base and 100 yard zero, I have 90 MOA available elevation. Not sure how far or what caliber you are planning to shoot but ditto on above, you will have a ton of elevation.
