News story telling?

Just watched the 12:00 news. Had a story about how houses that have "bunkers" and or safe rooms, sales are up 300% because of the possibility of a "civil war" ! Not surprised about the contents of the story, just that it was allowed to be aired....I try to stay up on the news, but this is the first I've heard of it. Is there something I'm missing..? rsbhunter

I agree...just like putting bars on your windows...does it keep the boogey man out, or imprison the occupants ? Nothing against the ammo hoarders, but how much ammo can you run with? And if you believe you can use the normal, everyday house as a fortress, one match can ruin your day....The only fight you're guaranteed to win is the one that doesn't happen......rsbhunter

Yea i was going to get a safe room but just couldnt work it into the plans right.
pretty much every person asks about one, and one guy got one about 10x10.

A safe room is great for a b&e situation....temporary.... If shtf happens, that 10x10'or 20'x20' room is gonna be REAL unpleasant after a couple people need to use the toilet facilities no one thought of while building it...short of a true "bunker" that has supplies, toilet, air supply, etc, your better off to have an evac plan....just my .02...rsbhunter

rsbhunter, the only way I can account for that story being on the noon news is that a mainstream news editor slipped up. Real news like that sure isn't popular on MSN news programs today.

I hear about these “evac plans”. Putting yourself out on the road and exposed during a time of strife with a truck load of supplies doesn’t sound like a good idea. Let’s say you get out of town OK and head up into the “hills”. Ya got a cabin up there? Tent? If you don’t, are you going to be camping on some one else's land?
I live out of town, in the hills. While I would welcome a few well supplied, right thinking families, I’d be pretty wary of folk coming onto my land with guns.

Who cares? Anyone with half a brain has set up what they are going to do a long time ago. As has been pointed out above a safe room isn't safe, maybe in hollywood but not anywhere near here.
The people here don't run and hide, you take the fight to your enemy before they get to your loved ones, ... period.

None of us really want to know, we talk our big talk, but this will be an ugly business that most of us don't have the abilities or stomach for. GSP said "fixed fortifications are a monument to the stupidity of man", I have to agree, a safe room/bunker could be a great short term solution in the right circumstances, but it won't hold up long term. Movement is the key to survival, you won't be able to shoot up bad guys during the day and go home and sleep in your warm comfy bed at night, bunker or not.

Call it a climate controlled cellar for storing root vegetables and it only added about $3000 to the price of the basement. $20000 should get you a wine cellar partially stocked.

Buddy laid out his saferoom/vault under his attached garage 20x25 room. Door installed (vault door was reclaimed from a bank)and hung with the two extra concrete walls on the pour when the did the basement added right at $4500, 3 years ago........
Imagine it depends on what part of the country your in.
