Wow... six relays? You must be out there with flashlights at both ends of the day!

How many competitors are there in all? How many targets can Sacramento put up?

Thanks for the updates BTW.

The Match Program that came with my Letter of Invitation said it was limited to 100 signed up by March 1st, don't know if they took on more than that or not. My understanding was they had 20 Target Frames in the pits and that shooting was to start at 8:30, shouldn't need a flashlight if every thing goes well.

REGISTRATION: Pre-registration is required. Entries must be received no later then March 1, 2010. Entries are limited to 100 competitors. Individuals needing to cancel will receive a full refund up to March 1, 2010.

Found a post from Monte on longrangeshooting about the Nationals, here is the link:

Sacramento has a total of 25 targets; they told us before hand they had figured a way to run up to 150 competitors with six relays. Like you, I figured we'd be running from dawn to dusk, and even worse once I got there and saw the range... it faces west, so I figured the last half of the afternoon would be absolutely miserable trying to shoot into the sun.

As it turned out, they ran it almost like a big three relay match: Relays 1 & 2 shot together, 3 & 4 together, and 5 & 6 together. For example... Relay 1 would shoot, Relay 2 scored (most people just went ahead and set up side by side on the firing point like a fullbore match and scored from position, but some set up their chairs, etc.), then 2 would shoot and one would score. There was a 'block' time for both relays to get done, with some extra figured in to allow for set up and prep time for the second relay. Relays 3 & 4 was 'on deck', and relays 5 & 6 were in the pit, so target service was generally good with two people on each target - on the weekend (Saturday team and Sunday individual) the California Grizzly state junior HP team pulled targets so the 'pit' relay had time to relax, go get a hamburger from the BBQ, etc.

The only real downside was things were a *little* cramped on the firing line - not so much if you are used to shooting fullbore at all, but some people shoot only conventional HP and are used to more space. It worked out well in the end - on the 600yd day we were done by 1430-1500, and on the 1k days we were done by 1530 on Friday (with pit changes) and before 1400 on Sunday (with paid pit service). I think pretty much everyone was absolutely amazed at how well it worked.

Some of us were talking... with the ability to have as many as 150 competitors on a 25 target range... that keeps it viable to have FCNC move around to some smaller ranges whereas there was some concern that things were growing to the point that there were getting to be some limits on how many ranges were actually big enough (40-50+ firing points) to handle the number of shooters.

That would make Rattlesnake a viable venue. The only problem would be the deafening noise from the howl of the wind combined with the whining of the competitors :-)

Steve,

I was thinking something along the same lines. October is kind of the 'light' wind season there, but I think the place has enough of a rep that nobody would go for it.

Just got the results in my inbox from Jim O'Connell:

The 2010 F Class Nationals are now history. Congratulations to F Open champion Derek Rodgers and the F T/R champion Lane Buxton. Team Savage took top honors in the F T/R team matches winning the 1000 Yard, the 600 Yard, and the Team Agg. Check the attachments for all the scores. FCNAT2010OPEN has all the F Open scores and FCNAT2010TR has all the F T/R scores. Thanks to the California Grizzlies (target pullers) for all their work and helping to make the Saturday and Sunday shoots more enjoyable. Based on the number of hamburgers and hot dogs that were consumed I think everyone had a good time. Thank you all for your support of the Folsom Shooting Club and we hope to see you at future matches. See you on the firing line. Jim O'Connell
