Newbie says 'hello'

Just joined this morning and wanted to say hello.

I basically live to hunt. After the sacred 'threesome" of God,family, and country--it's hunting and fishing with my family and buddies.

I just recently,3yrs ago) got into long range hunting through a fishing and hunting friend from South Williamsport,PA.He and his brothers have been doing it for 30+ yrs and have been very helpful, and patient) bringing me along.

Got my first deer using their bench weapon at 825 yds 2 yrs ago on the 2nd shot. The shooting took 5 minutes --the retreiving about 4 hours, down the hill, across a waist high stream,up the mountain, retrieve the deer and end up on the road, after recrossing the stream with deer in tow!!)Good way to loose weight :)

Will be shooting at deer this hunting season in North Central,PA and in Southern and Central NYS.

I know I can learn an a lot from this forum and I look forward to the day when i will be able to make some worthwhile posts.

Welcome! This web site is a tremendous resource for learning about precision shooting. The articles on the various rifles, cartridges, and shooters are amazing.

Quite a few of your fellow Pennsylvania BR shooters here as well. A great feature of the site is that I can learn from serious benchrest shooters like JB without actually being seen with him in public. ;) Me being a knuckle dragging hunter myself...

Regards, Guy

Welcome, AFISHN,Great name by the way).

Don't hesitate to post right away. Your field experience hunting will be very valuable. Note that we have a varmint and hunting forum and you probably have a lot of wisdom to share there.

As for precision reloading--there are an infinite number of fine points, but remember that accuracy starts with the "Three Bs"--Bullet, Barrel, and Brass. If you have excellent bullets, a premium barrel, with a good chamber by a talented smith), and good brass, really outstanding accuracy is possible with a wide variety of calibers.

Two things have made a big difference in my reloading. The first was measuring all my loads, and the second was developing ways to keep neck-tension more consistent. I've also found that the "short, fat" cases such as the 6BR and 6PPC really do seem to have an edge in inherent accuracy. With the 6BR sometimes it seems hard to come up with a "bad" load if you have a good barrel.

Tom -- If you are hunting in NC, PA you must know,or be hunting with) DC...

Good to have you here..I am near State College if you get up this way. Also shoot the BR matches at W-port and Lewistown if you make it there.

BTW, Welcome ;)

Hi Jason:thanks for the warm welcome and invite

I'm hunting with Merv M,and his brother Denny )BUT only part of the 2nd week in PA.The rest of the time in NYS and PA gun season, I probably will be huntng alone, until I can hook up with some other hunters who are intereted in doing LR hunting

I thought maybe through this board I could hook up with some other guys who might want to have another pair of good eyes and strong legs along OR who might want to learn some new spots that I have been working hard to find the past 12 months.

Waiting on my rifle:6.5=300WBY;stainless 300WBY Vanguard Rifle;#4 kreiger barrell;31"max with a brake;9 Twist.
Richards dual grip thumbhole brown laminate tips and gloss finish
2.5# trigger.

The hold up is the stock--it still hasn't come in yet and it was ordered 6 months ago.I am really getting anxious because I want to start practicing and learning the gun.

Tom -- I see you posted on PLRH too...look up Darryl Cassel,DC ref. above) over there...he is in the vicinity,NC/PA), and has more LR hunting experience than probably anyone living right now...

take care,
Jason
