Newbie Needs Help With 300 wsm Build

Hello;

I'm a complete newbie to precision rifle and could really use some help from you much more knowledgable folks. I've been talking with David Viers about building the rifle for me, but the 300 wsm isn't something he has built before so I'm ending up doing some leg work to figure this out.

Some background on the build. It will be a tactical rifle that will spend the majority of its life punching paper and ringing steel. It might occasionally be used on pigs and/or coyote at long range. I'm not really a hunter.

Here are the components I have acquired thus far for the build. Stainless Tikka T3 (action only from the rifle), Obermyer stainless 11 twist .298 - .308 AMU+ contour barrel, Roedale RCS II chassis (lucky enough to get one of their first run setup for AI long action mags). As the title says, I would like to have this built in 300 wsm, and here is where I need some help. I want the rifle to be a tack driver, but it is a tactical build so I'm a little at a loss as to what should be ordered in the way of the reamer for the chamber/neck/throat. I have Norma brass and plan to shoot Berger 210 Match Target VLD's, unless you all think I would be better of going with the 230 grain Bergers. I plan to precision handload, but I don't think I want to be turning the necks and such like the BR guys. David Viers asked me to call Pacific Tool & Gauge and talk to Dave Kiff, and told me he thought I should ask for a match chamber but a no turn neck? Then there is the issue of the throat to work correctly with the Berger VLD's. David V told me I should seat a Berger in a case with the boatail right at the neck/shoulder line and have the reamer made from that for the throat. I don't have the reloading tools yet so that will slow me down.

Anyway, I'm hoping some of you can give me some solid advice on how to machine the chamber/neck/throat. It would be awesome if PT & G already had a reamer that was correct for me since I'm trying to get this thing together sooner than later. Thoughts on top notch smithes that know the 300 wsm well would be great too. I started talking with David Viers about building me a 375 Snipetac on a Barnard P-Chey action I picked up a while ago, which will still be built by David, but it is going to take a long time to get a barrel and I needed more of an everyday rifle so I started talking to him about this build. Unfortunately David doesn't have the experience with the 300 wsm that he has with the Cheytac based rounds so I feel like we might be winging it a bit.

Sorry for the long post.

Here's the best advise you will get. Call Pacific Tool and ask for Dave Kiff. Tell him what you want and what bullet you want to shoot and he will make you one that will for your needs. Don't forget the go gauge. He doesn't need a loaded round, he does this every day.

Thanks Erik, David Viers told me to call Dave Kiff as well. Thanks again for taking the time to respond to help a newbie, I really appreciate it.

My .300 WSM has a .280" freebore for 230 Hybrids. That makes it marginal for any other bullet. Unless you really want to shoot them, stick with the right freebore for your primary bullet choice.
+1 Dave Kiff

Thanks Steve. Hopefully Dave will have the time to talk with me on Monday. I'm guessing the lead time to get the reamer is going to put my project on the slow train though. Unless they happen to have something on the shelf, but that's probably a long shot.
