Newbie F/TR Advice

Hi all from Australia. Just getting kick started in F/TR and have a few questions. Is anyone running 180gr JLK LBTs and if so, how are they perfoming and what freebore are you running? Secondly, is anyone using H4350 behind 210/215gr bullets in a 308 Winchester? We have done some preliminary testing down here using 48gr compressed behind a 215 Hybrid with reasonable early results. Any info you could help with would be really appreciated.

From memory, H4350 is pretty equivalent to ADI AR2209, right? If so, that seems like a pretty hot load behind a 210 / 215, but if its working and not showing signs of pressure (look closely), then thats great. But yeah, thats well above what I would have considered safe.

No it wasn't hot at all. No hard bolt lift, flattened primers, easy extraction. That was with Lapua large primer cases that were on the 6th firing, so if it was going to show pressure signs, I'm sure it would have with those cases. The gun has quite a long throat in it and there are examples of guys at other clubs running up to 50gr with 208 Amax pills.

H4350 has underperformed with 215's and lighter for me. I can't get enough into the case to get the pressure up.

With a much longer throat, it might be possible to use, but in the US Varget (ADI2208) is king for 215's and lighter.

I haven't tried the 180 LBT's, but the 210 LBT is a great bullet. I ended up settling on the 200 hybrid simply because I could get a little more velocity with nearly the same BC.

I'd take great care with that. You may have a gun that can handle it, but QL predicts a pressure of 80,000 PSI with a 210 grain bullet and 48 grains of H4350 at SAAMI spec length. Even at 3.0" OAL, it is still well over SAAMI spec pressure. QL suggests you need to seat to 3.1" OAL to have pressures under the max spec for the cartridge, and this does not leave much shank in the neck (depending on the bullet).

You seem to have worked it out for your rifle, but I'd recommend a lot of caution working up to that load in other rifles, depending of course, on the throat and OAL.

Sorry, I need to clarify further. Being in Australia I am using ADI AR2209, I simply used H4350 in my question as it's the nearest equivalent that you have over in the states. I can get 48gr into a Lapua case with a drop tube and that's level with the neck shoulder junction. Using a 220 freebore you can seat 10 thou off the lands to slight compression and we chronyd that load out of a 30" barrel at 2665 fps.

A few years ago i had a long throated 9.25 twist Brux barrel (30 inch) that i shot 215s out of that was originally setup for the 230s. My 215 load at the time with that barrel was H4350 (47.2 or 47.3 gr) with Lapua large primer brass and Tula LR mag primers. I used a 10 inch drop tube and had slight compression. Velocity was around 2570 ish if i remember correctly. I shot some pretty good scores in FTR with that setup. Most guys running the 215s use Varget and it seems to work well.

As for the 180 JLKs, i personally have not run them but i do run the 210 JLK LBT and it shoots very well with the right setup. There are some guys on this board that do run the 180s and have had good success with them, maybe they will chime in on that particular bullet.

Best of luck.

I use H-4350 with 190smk. 49.2gr gets me 2,720 fps out of a 24" stick (worked up from 47gr), Win. brass, BR-2 primers. Chamber does not have long freebore but good enough to seat the 190's @ 2.840" (2.235" on Hornady comparator), 0.020" in the lands, very compressed load but shoots bugholes.
