New Winds at Manatee ?

I remember way back when : Sam from ARTactical came down from Missouri and cleaned everybodies clock, shooting the claybirds at 565 with an AR rig, bi-pod,in .243AI. Someone there told him he did not have much of a chance with that thing off the bench.

I KNOW you can read, just thought you missed them. I'm not crazy about riding that far for 20 rounds for score. Also shooting clay birds on the berm for sighters. I've shot Manatee plenty, And Gene, Mitt, and the rest of the guys have always been friendly, but 230 + miles 1 way for 20 rounds for score, I'd have to think long and hard....

Update on changes to our 1000 yard IBS matches.

Below is a copy of an email I just sent to our local long range match regulars.

Any interest or suggestions from this forum's readers?

1000 yard IBS paper matches at the Manatee Gun Range.

Who would be interested in participating in a full regulation, but still Unregistered 1000 yard IBS match? We will insure that the line call would be exactly as published in the IBS rule book.

I am willing to purchase 18, 48"w x 36"h target boards to better support the full sized 42" square 1000 yard IBS targets. We have been using just the center 24" cutout, due to limited berm width at 1000. We are also forced for everyone to shoot cross fire, due to the same limitations. These targets would be placed all at the same level, with about 12 to 18" between the 42" targets. The 24" square number boards would be placed below the targets.

We can only put up 9 possibly to 10 of these target boards at 1000 yards. If Tom Anderson is right, about being able to cross shoot at a sanctioned event, maybe we could run a few "Unsanctioned" matches with full sized 42" x 42" IBS 1000 yard targets. I have a box of uncut targets here. If we have more than 9 or 10 shooters, we would just hold 2 relays.

Shooting at the just the center sections maybe disappointing some that on occasion miss the small paper center and do not give you the full target experience. Targets are still only a bit over a $1 so no increase in cost.

With this change, we would be very close, if not in full range compliance with the IBS and could then hold a future 1000 yard IBS SANCTIONED event maybe later this year. From then on, maybe hold them quarterly. We could get shooters from quite a distance, if we were in full compliance, be it registered or not.

Comments? If I get positive feedback, I will order the larger target boards and be ready to go on July 27th.

Steve

This is my opinion of this discusion, the Winds of Manatee bench rest match really has its act together! I have as much fun watching as the shooters do.
Note that is a seasonal match. Not done on the normal line, where many people don't now about.
The current Match director and helpers have put a lot of time and work into trying to meet everyones needs and wants into organizing a set schedule of weekend activities. My observation towards attendance is as follows.
Some people love shooting reactive targets such as gongs, Great we have 2 monthly match's 1 at 565yd and other at 1k some of this can be viewed on utube. Also we have as of now 2 scheduled paper match's that follow a IBS type format. Note 1 at 565y and other at 1k. Please come and shoot with us, its one of the friendliest ranges Ive been fortunate to attend. I would really like to see more attendance in comp, paper match's, that really can measure a achievement of great tuning! and skill.
Thanks for reading my 2 cents, hope to see ya there.

swed6.5, we think somewhat alike. I've had a couple of informative and polite PM's from Steve and Tom, with that, thanks for taking the time to reply. It looks like the Range improvement may not be done this year, and with that the shoots will remain the same. I'm used to shooting 30 rounds for score, and since traveling is not cheap and the ranges are far from home, I try to get the most for my $. I've shot other formats at other ranges that draw several disciplines in fun shoots, but that is better suited for another thread. One thing that floors me is that a novice shooter with a stock rifle shows up and next to him is a 60-80 lb. railgun :o. Like Larry the cable guy said, now that's funny. At least have multiple classes. I have shot Manatee plenty, and I know the rules have always been that way, but if you want more competitors, you need to change a few things, even for fun shoots.

Yea Donny I remember Sam coming from MO and cleaning our clocks. It was I that started the smack talk and it was just that. I also remember that he and I had more hits than the whole rest of the shooters, over 20 of you alls.

I didn't shoot that shoot, just remember you telling me about it. You had 1 or 2 shoots in at Manatee before I started shooting there.

Guys I can remember when I first started their wasn't as many members as we have shooters in our matches. We had a small 100 yd berm that was the whole rifle and pistol range with a movable wood bench that was it. I had a garage and I need a u joint and I went up to Moe's garage and he told me about the range. He knew I was shooting trap then. He told me to come on out. Saturday I took my 8 year old son a case of clay bird and a hand through. He told me Jack Morehead was wanting to put a trap machine in. Jack had the GMC garage. Jack told me they were putting a trap in come on out and help. When I got there their was Jack Jim Berry Glen Reynolds Moe and two others,8 bags of concrete shoves and sand. So I have seen much change.
We now have the finest range in the South East .We wouldn't have what we got if it wasn't for Gene' Vince,Moe and a few others. Working TOGETHER we can only make it better.
Good Shooting Larry

We have an 800 yard paper shoot at Bradford Sporting Farm on the 20th of July, 30 rounds for score + sighters. Everyone is welcome to come up and shoot, open to the public.
