New Walk Around varmint gun...

Morning guys..I'd like to build another Varmint rifle but this time a light weight with a functioning magazine for use to only about two hundred yds..Most likely I would not need the second shot but hey..Just want to hear what you guys would build for walk around varmint hunting..My first thought was a 788 rem. set up for the 6MMBR..but it is not really that nice to look at & most likely I would have to alter the bolt face to .473 diameter..then I thought maybe a short action sako...or a small mauser.maybe even a savage....What would you guys build to fill that bill??? Describe the Action & the caliber please..mike in ct

if your talking only 200 yds why not 223, 204, 22-250 al - and if you want to stick with the 308 bolt face do 22br or 20 br i have one and i love it or just stick with the 6br go with a slower twist barrel and shoot the lighter bullets like the 55 grain blitzking and its pushing it as fast as the 22-250

Mike,

It sounds to me like you have a .378 bolt face ? "modify to .473"

I would suggest a 20 Vartarg for short range, maybe stick to the smaller 30 - 35 grain bullets.

I ordered a barrel and reamer for one myself.

Using a Stiller Predator short repeating action, very nice).

Switch barrel rig,6BR, 6.5x47 Lapua Imp. barrels done)

I can't find any bargains on small actions lately...That custom switch barrel rig sure looks nice...I'll keep looking, the rem model 7 is nice..But I found no bargains in mausers..I may do another Savage..Easy to switch my own barrels..mike in ct

The little CZ comes to mind. Not particularly expensive, very lightweight, accurate and fun to shoot. Mine's a .204 Ruger.

Thats a pretty lil gun...How good is the trigger ?? I have a CZ 22lr & it is very nice to shoot..That may be the one !!!!mike

Any gun that carries and handles easily. Since you're talking 200yds and under, anything using a .221 or .223 case would be fine. One of mine is a 788 in .223 with 20" barrel. Not real pretty but works perfectly for how it's used. The small Sako/Mini-Mauser-CZ is a perfect size for .378" caseheads but you wouldn't want to be opening the boltface to 6BR. Not with any of them. And I don't think any gunsmith would even do it. Plus, a 6BR is too large for any of those magazines. The Mini Mauser has push feed and staggered internal magazine, I'd choose it over a CZ. The small CZ is a nice size but very rough compared to the Sako and the magazine hangs down pretty far. I also have several small Sakos and it's just a whole lot nicer action.....I'd rather have one Sako than 2 CZs, they're that much nicer to use. All those actions are the perfect size for a .221-.223 case. Savage - even the shortest Savage action is still quite a bit longer than a short Rem. 700 and much larger than necessary for a lightweight carry-around gun, especially using a .223-size or smaller case. I'd go with a Rem 700/7 or a small Sako-size action and whichever .378" case you like.

I found an old L-46 sako in 222...In decent shape but it lacks much of the refinement of other sakos I have seen...The bolt & trigger were nothing special...Feel was nowhere near as nice as my old Sako 270 winchester...My 75 SS varmint has a great trigger but the bolt on that one feels sticky to me..You are right the sako would be the nicest if I could find the right older one..mike in ct

Sunbuilder, is that a Holland stock? I am building a 6.5x47l with a holland stock, stiller tac 30, shillen barrel, and zeiss scope. It is going to look just like yours. Tell me how you like it. Thanks, Nick
