NEW VARMINT FOR SCORE

Hello everybody i am going to get a varmint for score shoot going in central ILL.,EFFINGHAM ILL.) this range has 100-500 yard berms.I guess what i need from you guys is a little info on maybe some of the things you have seen at other shoots that could have been better, ideas to make the shoots more interesting or stuff that's just left out or over looked. I want this to be more of a fun shoot with two or three classes with a cash payout and a trophy for the winner or each class.Nothing is set in stone would like everyone in-site on this cause if its not fun nobody shows up.....

I've heard of EFFINGHAM, ILL. Hear tell theve got some Effing good places to eat and Effing good sites to see. The Bob & Tom Morning Radio Show talks about Effingham from time to time :)

Could you give me,us) some more info on the range this would be taking place at? I'm only about an hour away from Effingham and would love to check things out.

Contact info.,fees, location, etc. would be great!

My local range only goes to 200 yards and I would love to have a chance to stretch my legs a bit from time to time.

Thanks!

This shoot is totally new there will be a meeting with some local shooters and board members to see were we need to start. The shoot will start early morning third Sunday of every month to start out; and with other shooters info, changes will be made as necessary.the fee i cant say the first shoot will be in may.I will find the web site to the range and post it later tonight.

Assuming you mean to shoot off of a bench or maybe even with bipods.
From shooting at different clubs these would be my suggestions. Of course others will like things different.

The type of target used at groundhog shoots adds an element of luck that adds to the game. Some kind of varmint should be used with scoring rings centered on it. Maybe a rat up close, crow in the middle, & groundhog at long range. Missing the varmint is a 0 hitting the varmint scores 5 and the scoring rings run 6-10x.

Varying the size of the scoring rings at different distances makes it more enjoyable than using the same size rings across the course.

5 worst shots for record with unlimited sighters within a set time allowance makes for more shooting fun.

Have multiple sighter targets on the same paper as the scoring target.

Keep all targets as close together as possible while considering possible crossover shots. One big backboard if possible. Even if it means you have to hang 2 rows. Plenty of berm on each side for sighting in on clay birds or wood blocks while cutting down on the wind helps to keep the playing field even. If you string the targets out across the whole berm the 2 ends will have more wind than the center targets. But then 2 rows high will have the bottom getting slightly more mirage than the top targets.

The 3 class breakdown of custom class, factory varmint class, & factory deer hunter class brings in a varied crowd and allows those of us that like to shoot different kinds of guns the chance to do so.

For both the factory classes I like these rules from Mayberry’s site “Any factory rifle except Remington 40-X, Coopers, Dakota Arms, and Sako. No firearms chambered for PPC or BR cartridges. Stock Barrel and trigger must be original factory and bedding can be done. Original factory triggers can be tuned.” I’d add some of the more expensive Savages to that list also.

There are 2 threads here regarding the order of fire and the use of spotting scopes that you may want to look over. I like allowing the range master to daily determine order of fire based on the weather and I like allowing spotting scopes for more toys, but no help.

After the targets are scored hang them out where they can be seen by anyone. Do not allow them to be taken until the end of the match or you’ll have guys pulling them down before anyone else can see any scoring mistakes that added to their score. But the same guys will come running in if they were scored short.

Try to run relays by class. That way people competing with each other in a class are shooting in the same conditions.
Instead of allowing people to pick their benches, assign the bench and relay in a fair random way while taking into consideration the people that are working the match, multiple gun shooters, and people that have to share equipment.

Seek out the help of people at your club that don’t mind thinking. You don’t want people around you that want to keep it simple out of laziness of mind. But on the other hand be careful of those that’ll do extra work or other’s jobs in order to try and take over.

People are going to complain no matter what you do. But if you make it as fair and even as you can more people will come back.
