New user to the forum

Just wanted to post a quick note to say "Thanks!" to all you folks, especially the owner/moderator. What a WONDERFUL site you all have here!

I've been recently bitten by the accurate rifle shooters bug big time. Over the past three months I have absolutely scoured the Internet for as much good knowledge as I can locate and I must say that between this forum and the accompanying 6mmbr.com web site I think I've found the Holy Grail of excellent information pertaining to accurate rifle shooting!

There as SOOOOOO many great articles on 6mmbr.com that it just boggles my mind. Nowhere else have I seen such a great amount of accurate information than there, and here on this forum.

As a newbie in this regimen I'm sure you all are going to be hearing from me on a consistent basis as I've certainly come to know that there are a great many veterans out there that love to share information, and as a highly technical individual by trait, I love to take it all in.

I won't go into great detail here at the moment, but just as a matter of introduction I will say that this new adventure of mine is starting out with an decent vehicle that I'm still awaiting to arrive from ordering - A Savage 12BVSS chambered in Win .243. Lots of new accessories will be arriving in the near future as well, many based on things I've read here on the forum as well as the articles on 6mmbr.com - matter of fact, I'm just about to give Mike Lucas a call/e-mail and purchase his acclaimed Lucas Cleaning-Rod Bore Guide for this new rifle, simply because I read of it here and can easily see it is top of the line - so in a small way, thanks for already pointing me in the right direction as I'm certain I could have blown much more money on other products that don't even compare. As a matter of fact, I've saved so much money already from the incredibly good and accurate information out here that just previous to registering on the forum and writing this first note I took the time to donate to this site via PayPal - what an INCREDIBLE bargain and smart use of some funds!

Been a handgunner for years, and reload extensively for those platforms in 9 different calibers - easily over 10.000 rounds with many more years to come. I also plan to extensively reload in the Win .243 rifle caliber as well. Those accessories, pieces and parts are 'on the way' as well. BTW - I'm the one whose loaded handgun rounds like they were rifle rounds, thus achieving incredible results that most handgun reloaders can't believe can be achieved. Yeah, I know, what's the purpose in handgun calibers right? Well, the only real purpose as I see it was to prove it could/can be done, and in the process learning a ton. I think accurate rifle reloading is going to be a real 'shoe-in' for me... :)

So there ya have it - my intro. Hope to participate and add to the fine discussions on a consistent basis...

Until that next post, thanks again, take care and good shooting all!

Hi Tom:

Welcome to the site. This is one of the best there is. Keep us posted on what "accurate rifle" projects you're up to.

Tom,

Your background sounds a bit like mine except I also handloaded rifles, going back over 45 years.

I started accuracy shooting with the exact same rig, a Savage 12BVSS and liked it. I shoot F-Class at the local club, at 300 meters. I do not load hot rounds. You'll find that at least 6mm there will be 2 or more nodes at different powder weights. I choose the one lower on the pressure scale. Even so, the Savage barrel was quite rough, coppered up badly and needed some TLC to smooth it out. I couldn't do too much without just ruining the barrel, so I quit fiddling after a few bouts with JB. The barrel quit being accurate after about 1,500 rounds. I kept chasing accuracy with powder weight and bullet seating, and discovered that the throat had gone away.

Perfect time to rebarrel it. I had a local gunsmith install a Shilen 1:8 twist and chamber it for 6BR with a .272 no turn neck. ,By the way, in the course of chasing the accuracy in the .243 I even went the neck turn and true route; no better accuracy.) You can get some of the good barrels already threaded to go onto the Savage.

To shorten the story, I wish I would have never kept the rifle as a .243. The 6BR in that rifle, original stock, original acutriger) has set the club record twice, perfect 600's with 42 and 44x's.

I did go for a slightly larger diameter barrel and had the gunsmith hog out some wood. He also glass beded the action. Keep the action torqued in the stock at 35-40 in lbs.

I really like my Savage in 6BR.

And thanks for the generous donation. User support is really important for us to keep going. It takes a lot of time to produce the feature articles and those are hours I can't devote to making a normal living. User contributions also help us buy components, barrels, stocks etc.) for testing.
