Ive been having to learn the hard way on how not to Neck turn casses. This last Long Range rifle I built requires the necks to be turned down & I have been having a fit getting it right.
I would work over a few cases & then move the Forester neck turner for the next pass Then have to go back & do some more cases that were virgin non fired & reset this thing again and over again. Needless to say Not all my necks were the same thickness. I dont have a Neck expander mandrel yet & Needed to get this thing all sorted out before Camp Perry. which is comming up way to fast. 200 peices of brass is alot to turn two to three times. I was having some issues & talked to a local bench shooter who said I really need to use the mandrel & messure the neck thickness.,I dont have a ball Mic either)
Short on time & budget I had a fleeting moment when I pulled some bullets out of sized & turned dummy rounds for confirmation when I thought I would do this...
I took My RCBS bullet puller & stuck a 142 gr Sierra Match king upside down so the pointy end is facing the ground. I then lubed the bullet with Imperial wax. Then ran the case up into the bullet & back out.,The casses were all neck sized to 290 just before) Then it went over to the Neck turner to be turned. this time it slid onto to the forster Neck turning mandrel with a nice snug fit that was not to tight nor to loose.
I was concerned at first that the run out on the case would be messed up doing it this way but after 170 rounds being loaded my run out on the all bullets was awsome. average was .001 with most being less than that & a few at .002 the neddle barley even wiggles. Man I love that!!!
I will get me a Mandrel and Ball Mic from sinclair but this works in a pinch. Especially with new brass that wont fit on the Mandrel with out brute force.
I ended up tossing some casses that I messed up in this learning curve & that hurts when they are almost $1 a pop.
Hope this helps.
