One of the happiest days of my life when my then 10 y.o. daughter said to her horse obsessed mother "mommy, I don't like horses, they are just big and smelly". Unfortunately her mother has over compensated for her now grown daughter with a stable of horses and an expensive fox hunting habit. Oh well!

I got off cheap, my daughter only wanted a Toyota!
.... That will steedely empty your wallet.
That said, there is no more wonderful vision than the joy on a daughter/granddaughter's face as when they mount up and ride off on an adventure..... until you see that teenage mongrel of a stable-boy riding off in the "opposite direction" .... allegedly.
But seriously, my daughter worked/volunteered for Hope Reigns introducing inner-city and physically challenged kids to horses and it was some of the most rewarding times of her life. She of course also learned a lot about personal responsibility when she realized nobody else was mucking out that stall..... just sayin.
That said, there is no more wonderful vision than the joy on a daughter/granddaughter's face as when they mount up and ride off on an adventure..... until you see that teenage mongrel of a stable-boy riding off in the "opposite direction" .... allegedly.

I'm not shelling out any money for this one. It's all on my son and his wife. My kids growing up never had a real interest in horses. The house we were in when they were little had a barn rented to a man who had draft horses and horses that pulled buggies and sulkies. My kids rode with him in the buggy several times and we plowed a very big garden with two of his horses but the love of horses really didn't take off for them. They had hogs for a number of years in the county fair, and rabbits and chickens, cousins had goats...
Horses were a very big part of my life. We had a horse when I was a kid. First boarded her at a stable but soon built a barn at home and a paddock. 4-H, Saddle club, county fair...horse shows, “contest” meaning barrel races, “cloverleaf” and such. Good times. Trail rides...
From age 16 going on for about 6 years I worked at a stable that had, at any given time, 50 to 60 horses. Some boarded, some owned by the stable. They gave riding lessons and had many students of various levels of development. Had 4 barns, three paddocks and big indoor arena. Yes, cleaning stalls was a big part of what I did (somebody always asks when I tell them I worked there). Part time during the school year and full time plus in the summer. Feed and water twice a day, moving horses in and out, truck driving, building maintenance (we even built one new barn from the ground up), and baling hay. OMG bailing hay. Long, long hot summer days in the sun. I was a lot tougher in those days. Many more chores, too many to list.
And coincidentally my granddaughter's other granddad has much the same past experience as me, he worked a stable when he was young and so on. So there's plenty of horse sense in this family!

Grew up with lots of horse people, but never took to them. Preferred to be on a dirt bike or a 3 or 4 wheeler.

Oh, get me started on motorcycles! My son now has my last dirt bike, a YZ250 with a wide ratio gearbox. I raced dirt bikes seriously, motocross, hare scrambles and cross country for many years. Kawasakis first and then Yamahas...actually I may have written about that on these forums previously. Raced against some of the best. Had some truly spectacular crashes and tied some bikes in knots. Couldn't ride dirt bikes anymore so took to pavement, after two big crashes the wife said "no more." And she's right I'm almost in a wheel chair now, my body can't withstand any more damage. Always had to push the limits, find the ragged edge and then ride beyond it.So, you buy daughters horses and sons motorcycles?
