new to the sport and need help

Ok guys bear with me, I am completely new to this sport and don't have the faintest clue were to start so I have tons of questions. First, are there any matches/ clubs in the northwest florida area? Second what caliber rifle should I start off with and what components. I'm not saying moneys not a issue, I'm more than willing to pay for quality but on the other hand I am a young single college student so I'm not exactly rolling in it either. I understand that rifle type/ caliber is a direct corelation to the diciple I will be shooting but going back to my first question I don't know what or if any is available in my area. Third and final question for know is that I have absolutely no experience reloading and would like to be pointed in the right direction for literature geared for the beginer. Thanks guys any help at all is greatly appreciated

jtdavis20,
Welcome to the forum and to the gun world. You need to do some reading and then you will have a better idea on what direction you are going and what questions you will need to be asking.I suguest a copy of Glen Zediker's,
HANDLOADING FOR COMPETITION. (http://www.zediker.com/books/handloading/hlmain.html ) It is a great read. Also you can read articals from here on 6br. On the left side of the home page and @ the top of the page is lots of stuff to sort through. Get on the internet and find out what kind of shooting you would like, f-class-f tr-Benchrest- long range BR ect..Best of luck and look forward to talking to you again.

Thanks wayne, I will definetly be buying that book in the next couple days. I've actually been a daily reader of this site for the last two years and that's part of the problem. Absolutely no offense intended to the guys that run the site so please don't bash me. Its just been information overload and I'm having trouble sorting through all of it. I'm regards to the style of shooting I would like to do, f-class would match my current style of shooting the best. I don't have any reloading experience but I have been shooting deer and varmints out to 1000 yards with accurized remington senderos(new kreiger barrels with reamers cut mostly to hornady ammo specs). The only problem is that I haven't been able to find any organized matches in my area (pensacolas rural communities) and I was curious if anything had fallen through the cracks tat somebody could point to me. Once again, bthanks for all the help.

I am from the other end of the continent so I can't help you with the matches but I know there is some stuff going on down there I here some croos talk about it. Go to our compitition forum and ask there. good luck.

JT,
Welcome. Right now there is only one range offering 600yd shooting here in FL. It's located in Palm Bay and is called the Port Malabar Rifle and Pistol Club. That's on the east coast about midway up. They do offer F and FTO matches as well as Highpower, Mid-range and a host of other disiplines. The 600yd matches are held on the 1st weekend of the month from Oct to June check out pmrpc.com I don't know of any clubs near you but I do know there are 100 yd matches in your area. If you ever get down south (Mid state) There are lot of shooters willing to help you with reloading including me.

Good shooting, Jim

Thanks guys, I definetly appreciate the leads and I will check them out today. If I ever make it down there I will definetly take you up on your offer jim. Thanks again
Jon

Rifle Rimfire' 22
Centerfire 308 W
Reloading Video Tapes by David Tubb...very good intro and would be sufficient to start your reloading process.

With a decent heavy barreled factory rifle in something like .243 you'll be impressed with what you learn and how good you get. A Remington SPS Varmint, Ruger VT Target, Tikka Varmint would get you sub-MOA for around $600, with good handloads I think any of them would shoot under 1/2 MOA. Try not to go too cheap on glass though.

Personally I'd take a .243 over a 308 any day, better ballistics and a lot less recoil and 6MM bullets are still somewhat cheap, once you go 6.5MM or bigger it seems the price starts skyrocketing.

I'm not sure about how far you want to drive and you aren't sure what discipline you want to shoot so let me tell you Twin Oaks Range near Dublin, Georgia may not be too far for you. They shoot benchrest there. They don't have a 600 yard range but 100-200 yards may be your cup of tea when everything gets shaken out. As benchrest shooters load as they go it is a good place to observe and ask about re-loading. And of course there is always something for sale that you really need to have. One of the best to learn everything about from loading to shooting is a guy in Vidalia Georgia

there is a range in north central Fl. Bradford sportsmans Farm. 850, 400,and 200 yard ranges. There are matches frequently as well. It is located in Graham Fl.

Thanks guys for all the help I really do appreciate it. I do feel like I need to clarify though. I've been shooting since I was four years old and long range has always done it for me. My family has property with the ability for me to shoot well in the excess of over 2000 yards. I haven't come any were close to that of course but with factory remington senderos and premier boosted luepolds I have managed a few 1000 yard groups, and thanks to all y'all and this site I've learned more in the last 3 months then all the years behind me. Look me up if y'all are ever in the pensacola milton area. I'm always lookin for somebody to go shootin with and more than willing to learn. Thanks again. Ps if anybody is into 45-70s we have a couple plates hung for shooting

JtDavis20,
I wish we were closer together I would take you up on the 45-70 shooting :) Good luck and don't be a stranger, I would like to here how thing are working out.
Wayne.

jtdavis20: Might be a long drive for you, but Manatee Florida holds matches at various distances out to 1000 yd. My son is a member at the before mentioned Port Malabar Rifle & Pistol Club, just a few miles Southwest of Melbourne and competes in the 600 yd. F-Class matches there. I've shot there as his guest and it is a very high class club with just about every shooting game available.
