new to the 6mm br

Just picked up a savage fclass 6mmbr. lots of reloading experience but zero with this cartridge.

I bought 200 rounfs of lapua brass and I have an abundece of varget.

What is the concenous on primers? i have a pile of 205m's but seems like 450 are popular.

How about bullets? will hardly ever shoot past 600. 105vlds?

Anything to shorten the learning curve would be appreciated.

CCI450s, 105 VLD Targets, Huntings or Hybrids or 107 Sierras, haven't tried any custom Bullets but hear and believe they work well. If using the Hybrids use a 1:7.5 twist. Varget is the only powder I have used, 30gns or tenth or two under or over works well for me. Berger Bullets work well jumped or jammed. 107 Sierras like jump in my guns between 5 and 15.

I've shot 3x 8 twist Kreigers to date and the above has worked well in them, the BR is easy to tune and shoot. Enjoy.

Cheers Rushty

THanks Rusty. I like vlds so I will bick up a couple hundred 105's and some cci 450's.

IM ordring a wilson in line seater.

WHat are you guys running for neck tension?

Regnar:
i have had the exact same rifle you have now
it will shoot the berger 105 VLD pretty well: jammed about 0.010 for my rifle. 28.3 gr varget
with the savage model 12 it is miss and hit on how high you can get the powder up of varget, when i went up to 29 gr of varget i had pressure signs and bolt lift issues.
it shot very well at 28.3 gr :
your should be a 1:8 twist will be just fine for 105 vld berger
Neck tension: i used very low neck tension and it worked out well: 0.001 neck tension
you will have lots of fun with this rifle.
you started with a great rifle
best of luck
let us know how she shoots

don't forget the Berger 108's. super easy to tune and super accurate. load 10 to 20 thous off the lands and they sing. Varget or RE 15.

The Berger 108's shoot better (using Varget) out of my Savage 12F 6BR than the 105 VLDs or the 105 Hybrids. Also found that the CCI BR4 primers worked better than the 450's (not sure why).

I agree with you on the primers. I shoot a pair of 6BRS's form 100 to 1000yds. I started with 450's but was not satisfied with my SD. Switched to BR4"s and went to single digits. I suggest you try some 106 EPS bullets. Most consistent bullet you will find bar none that I have ever found. I no longer sort, measure and weigh bullets. Take them out of the box and shoot them.

Two questions I forget.

1. Should I turn the necks?

2. does anyone on here make a dummy round for the 6br?

I haven't turned necks with my 3 barrels, my chambers are all .272 no turn necks, I use a .268 bushing which gives me 1thou neck tension or less, seems to be working for me quiet well.

Regnar,
For what its worth, I shoot the Savage Model 12 in 6mmbr. Only thing I've had done to it is the Rifle Basix SAV 2 Trigger installed . And I shoot strictly 100 yd BR which is why I thought I'd pass along the load I use. IF you are going to shoot 100-200 yds, consider using Barts 68 Gr Ultra FB's being pushed by 29-31 grs of VVN133. Stick with the 105's for anything further out with Varget.

in answer to your question,s:
1. I lightly turn my brass just to clean them up which helps in achieving best concentricity. AS good as Lapua brass is, I still LIGHTLY turn all my brass in various calibers and therefore achieve excellent and consistent runout, better than unturned brass, having tested several hundred pieces both ways and different batches.

2. Make your own "dummy round" as every rifle is different meaning chamber depth varies. A 272 chamber is very common, but seating depth vary when you are chasing best accuracy.

Just info for you to consider.

Alex

Thanks,

I turn all my x47 brass to .0125. After reading all I can I was unsure if it would be beneficial to even skim the necks.

not sure what you met but I met to say a modified case. Sorry about that. I found the guy on here that will make me one for 10.
